Default Shanahan explains non-discipline decisions (Stoll vs. Fowler)

Good breakdown as to why Stoll did not get any supplemental discipline on the Fowler hit against the Ducks the other night.

Pretty cool to have a little segment like that. That's what I was thinking when I saw the hit.

The Stoll video doesn't work for me. What did he say?

Shannaban said that basically that the elements of a malicious hit were non-existent in this instance. Stollie was in close pursuit of Fowler, and was basically on his heels (a player who is driving into a hit is typically on the toes of his skates) as Fowler held up an turned towards the boards, essentially leaving Stoll with no time to stop, or nowhere to go. Upon impact they paused it and showed Stoll was attempting to brace himself for impact with his right forearm against the glass, and wasn't intentionally trying to make contact with Fowlers head.

Fowler stopped in front of Stoll. Stoll wasn't looking to put him through the boards evidenced by 1) stoll was on his heels when Fowler stopped and wasn't shifted weight forward on toes like he was going to crush him, and 2) Stoll put his arm out to brace for impact against the glass instead of trying to rock Fowler.

edit: whoops, left the post open way too long

Fraser didn't agree but glad it's not his decision to make.

I like it a lot that the league in general and Shanahan in particular are taking the time to explain what goes into these decisions. It's a real benefit to fans to understand more about the intricacies of the game we love so much.

I finally got the video to work after rebooting. Interesting about being on his heels, I didn't take that into account, but he still threw an elbow to the back of Fowler's head no matter how I look at it.

Shanahan forgot to mention that since Fowler is a Duck he deserved to get hit. That's some sort of rule...or so I've heard.
