I believe that IS the case.Originally Posted by Deadmarsh28:2568943
There are currently three and they are used just as you stated.
Yes, but no.
By definition, three Stanley Cups exist:
The first is the presentation Cup with the HHOF seal on the bottom. This is the one we see in this thread and it's what you would call the "real" cup.
The second is the replica Cup, which is (basically) permanently on display at HHOF. The presentation Cup is present at HHOF only 20-30 days a year, the rest of the time you can see the replica Cup.
The third "Cup" consists only of the original bowl and base, which were used until 1963 when they became to fragile to use. It's also permanently on display in the vault at HHOF. The other two Cups are authenticated carbon copies of this one.
So unless they give the bowl to the champion for permanent use or leave the HHOF without a Cup for most of the year, they would need to make a third full-size Cup.
I don't know. To me, part of what makes the Stanley Cup special is it's something you don't usually see every day. Like I was at the Dodger game last night and they had one of their World Series trophies in a display case down in the Dugout Club. I think the Cup might lose some of it's uniqueness if every team got one like the trophies in other sports, or even if you got to keep it for a year before giving it back to the league. People might start to take it for granted if it's something they walked by every day.
From the Coach Sutter's day last week
Darryl Sutter brought the Cup to Viking Carena, the arena and recreation centre in his hometown.
Coach Sutter and his wife Wanda pose for a photo from the second story of the famous Sutter barn.

umm...Bernie Nicholls with the Cup. I'm not entirely sure what's happening here, but I like it.
