You may not agree with everything Helene has written over the years but she has impressive credentials. From her bio at the Times website:

She covered the NHL and Olympic sports for more than a decade and in 2005 was voted the winner of the Elmer Ferguson Award, given annually by the Hockey Hall of Fame "in recognition of distinguished members of the newspaper profession whose words have brought honor to journalism and to hockey." I don't mind reading criticism of the Kings as long as the points are well made and I can see some validity to the criticism. I don't need people to write things that are praising the Kings when my eyes can see something different going on. And you've got to admit that both throughout their history and specifically this year before February, the Kings were deserving a lot of criticism. Everyone around here likes ripping on Hayward and Ahlers for not being objective on Ducks broadcasts. Well if you want objectiveness, that means the Kings have to be called out sometimes, whether it's by Bob and Jim, Helene, other announcers, writers around the country.

My problem with Helene getting a day with the cup is that she is a journalist. She is a non-affiliated observer of the organization that is supposed to provide objective, unbiased reporting.

Including her in the celebration by awarding her a day with the cup poses a conflict between her reporting and her personal relationship with the organization.

Now, this may seem silly because, as many will gladly point out, she often seems biased against the Kings. That is of no matter; my concern still stands. There is an inherent conflict of interest when a non-affiliated journalist is treated not only like a member, but an integral member, of the organization.

She should have refused their offer if she wished to remain impartial.

OK? That may be true, but my post has nothing to do with what she wants or thinks. It's about the relationship between a professional journalist and the organization she covers.

who holds the burden of impartiality?
I have no problem with a team currying favor. Why not get as much good publicity as possible?

I doubt very much that she got a full day. I'd be surprised if it was more than 30-60 minutes while it was on its way elsewhere. IF I'm right about that, I don't have as much of a problem, but I otherwise generally agree with your conflict of interest point.
