I'm not letting myself get angry or frustrated by this lockout. If it ends and there's a season, great. If it doesn't, I have more time to spend on other things. I don't begrudge the players what they make and I don't begrudge them the right to negotiate what they think is a fair deal. I understand they have a unique skill set where people are willing to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to watch them use that skill set.
That said, neither the owners or players are sympathetic figures. The owners aren't, they've got hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. The players, they're not sympathetic figures either and that is why you don't see many pro player comments. In the grand scheme of things, they get payed quite a bit of money to play a game for a living. They're not saving lives, treating patients, fighting fires, teaching students, building infrastructure, and so on. They provide entertainment. I understand society values entertainers more than doctors, police, firefighters, and teachers. Entertainment is great and society needs something to distract itself from the other crap going on. I understand that they do take risks to do what they do. They pass up on education because they're hoping for the rewards that come with playing in the NHL. They risk injuries, but their medical care is taken care of. They could suffer a long term injury that impacts their future, but they're being paid quite well and have access to the best medical care to deal with those issues. Yes, they do miss things like the birth of children, kids birthdays, other family events, however that's something they knew would happen when they decided they wanted to become a pro athlete.
I guess I never have understood why anyone should be pro-player or pro-owner. I'm not going to worry about someone like how poor Brad Richards is going to survive a 7% paycut this season. I'm too worried about how I'm going to pay my already thousands of dollars in medical bills before I have another surgery. There are too many good people who can't find a job or if they do find one they're underemployed, or they don't have good healthcare benefits. Billionaires and millionaires arguing over how to divide a $3 billion pie is ridiculous.
