Of course, that didn't prevent a lockout in football either, but there was never really any risk that regular-season NFL games would have been cancelled. That's because the question there wasn't whether every owner would make money; the question was merely how much. But in the NHL, even with its booming revenues, there are still a number of teams losing money. I'm not sure exactly how many teams, or how much money. The league may have furnished this information but there's probably some exaggeration in those numbers and I wouldn't be too quick to accept them at face value. Still, there's no doubt in my mind that many teams are losing money, and some are clearly taking substantial losses. Until that ends, we'll continue to see regular season games cancelled, and perhaps seasons too.
