I don't see why the players should get much of a say on any of this.

If I'm a doctor, and Kaiser Permanente is paying more than St. Joseph's, I may decide to apply for Kaiser.

If the players don't like what the owners/NHL are offering, they can go to the KHL, SEL............

The owners and league should be able to make sure it can remain as profitable as it needs to be. It's business, and the players sure as hell aren't gonna pitch in if the team is losing money.

I know there are more complicated issues than that, but I think you get what I'm saying here.

NHL players get paid what they're market value is, if they don't like it.... try another market.

False. The "market" is artificially capped at the demand of the owners. Did you forget about the last lockout?

Just end the season already, they should've cancelled the season when the remainder of the December games were cancelled.

And the lockouts will keep happening until the capped number is such that almost zero teams lose money year in, year out.

I think Tre West is looking at the NHL as a single entity, like Kaiser. Kaiser has an artificial cap too and if you don't like it then you go somewhere else for a job. If the players don't like the NHL payscale then they go to the KHL, etc.. and see if they pay more with all the same comforts and amenities. Others may look at the NHL as 30 separate hospitals, the only 30 hospitals in N.America, where the 30 hospitals are getting together to set prices unfairly. It's probably neither since the 30 NHL teams are intrinsically and inseparably linked together. They are separate entities but then again they must operate in a well oiled symbiotic relationship to remain functional. Otherwise chaos ensues. Each team that does well helps all the other teams do well.

I thought the "best part" was the righteous indignation of the Buffalo announcers. "That was intent to injure!" Oh please...spare us all. The only intent to injure was when Miller swung his stick at Lucic. Mike Smith saw that and just laughed.

They get paid what their market value is...until the owners lock them out and say that, even though we signed you to this deal two weeks ago, we can't afford it so things have to change.

Your analogy only works if every contract signed ran the length of the CBA. If I sign a contract to work at Kaiser, and they suddenly stop paying me and say they can't afford me any longer, but won't release me to go work at St. Joseph's, I can't just...go. The NHL isn't like regular private companies so we have to stop acting like they are.

As I said, I've moved to the owners side of things, but let's not pretend like the players aren't being bullied into accepting something. It's not a free market in the NHL where people can ply their trade somewhere else on a whim. The players are stuck and will have to accept something...and I fully believe they should.

Flase. the "market" is more than just the NHL, as Tre West cearly pointed out in his post. If the players don't like playing in a league with cap they can always take their talents to Russia, or Finland, or Sweden, or Switzerland, etc., etc., etc.
