I find it interesting people accuse Stewart of being a cancer, when Canes fans apparently think he's a good, funny guy. He's soft and slow, according to them, and Westgarth adds toughness to the line up, which is why the trade was made.

Westgarth had no future with the Kings. The fact that he returned assets is great. Usually he would be waiver fodder, so what's the problem?

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Anthony Stewart from the Carolina Hurricanes along with their fourth-round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft and their sixth-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft in exchange for forward Kevin Westgarth, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Stewart, 28, has played in 262 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers and Florida Panthers. He has recorded 71 points (7-44=71) and 123 penalty minutes.

A 6-3, 230-pound native of La Salle, Quebec, Stewart last year played in 77 games for Carolina and he recorded 11 points (6-5=11). The previous season he recorded a career-high 14 goals with the Thrashers.

He was originally selected by the Panthers in the first-round (25th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Westgarth has played in 90 regular season games with the Kings dating back to the 2008-09 season. Last year he played in 25 regular season games and had two points (1-1=2).

So you're saying that Rutherford got one over on DL, who has proven over the last few years, time and time again, that he is a pretty good judge of what sort of character a winning team needs??? You're really having a hard time with this trade. I understand some love for Westgarth, but you're sorta going out of your way in trying to make a case that this is a bad trade. It's not. It's a great trade for the Kings. An unneeded asset traded for 3 assets is just the sort of trade ANY fan should want their team's GM to make. It's like that BMX bike in your garage that you'll never ride again - sell it on Craigslist for some cash to go get something you want/need. Simple.
