Remember when McSorley was traded to Pittsburgh?
Has Sutter ever had a connection with Stewart? I don't see the flyers history although I did see the juniors reference. Just curious. Sounds like he was included for a variety of reasons. Best to Westie and I hope he gets into the lineup out there.
YAHOO! Sports weighs in:
Los Angeles Kings: The Kings somehow tricked the Carolina Hurricanes into giving them a roster player and two draft picks for Kevin Westgarth, who plays five minutes a night, has five career points, is too expensive, and sucks. As Cam Charron said on Twitter, his page on Behind the Net looks like the Dow Jones in Sept. 2008. He doesn't even fight! A one-for-one of Westgarth for Stewart would have been highway robbery for the King. I don't understand. This is an amazing trade.
Wouldn't be surprised if Stewart is one of the first cut to Manchester. If he gets picked up fine, otherwise his salary costs about 100k toward the cap.
Will miss Westy! Best of luck to him anywhere he goes!
Glad we got something in return for him though.
Seems Brent had Stewart at one time, not sure if that means anything or not.#LAKings Darryl Sutter points out his brother Brent coached @ehStew13 when he won gold medal w/ Canada at 2005 WJC. #hasthescoutingreport
If it means something, I think it's very little. Truth is the Stewart kid that played for Canada at the World Junior Championships and was a first round pick in 2003 is far removed from the player the Kings got yesterday in a trade.
Q: Any impressions of Anthony Stewart coming in today?
DS: Yeah, I’m happy to see him. I was sorta reflecting last night on it because we didn’t know about (the trade) until yesterday morning…But some of the guys are very familiar with him. Mike Richards and Jeff Carter won the gold medal (at the World Junior Championships) with him at North Dakota during the last lockout…My brother coached him on that team.
Q: He says his role is to come in here and be a big body, bang around and maybe get in a couple fights. Is that the role that you see him in?
DS: I think he’s competing with three or four other guys – (who) everybody assumes are in our lineup – for the same position. You can’t play them all. You can only have a 23 man roster and you can only dress 18 skaters.

If Stewart makes the opening night roster it may be at the expense of Nolan who is not subject to waivers and can be called up at any time. Chances are Stewart gets waived again and if he clears it; like he did last season, he will then be able to be called up at any time now that re-entry waivers has been eliminated and teams are not longer on the hook for 50% of the salary. I think that's what DL is hoping happens to Hickey (who was waived today), but I think Edmonton may pick him up.
...but if Sutter could get Stewart to buy in and realize that at 28, and on is his 4th organization, with his opportunities diminishing at evry lazy shift, the Kings could have a big body to help up front with the condensed schedule. i know it's a big "IF" but that's what I'm hoping for. I'm ok either way if he gets waived. If it works, and we can get some production out of him, DL is a genius! If he's waived and picked up by another team, DL did fine as well.
I don't think the World's Junior connection with Richards and Carter adds any value here and I'm not yet convinced it's all up to Anthony Stewart to still be a King before the puck drops on Saturday. We'll see...
