The two situations are different. If it were allowed it would potentially mean more money to the player and he would still be in the same situation team wise for the same amount of years. Only difference would be the team could have more cap space to build around him.

Just as an example: NYR trade Wade Redden and their 2013 2nd round pick to the LA Kings for Oscar Moller and the LA Kings 5th round pick. LA Kings then buy out Wade Redden.
End Result: Kings move up several rounds in the draft AND get rid of a contract, all in exchange for cash and some cap space.
I'm not sure if the Kings would be willing to spend that much money and use that much cap space for this example, but that's a way it would work in practice.
