Slovakia beat Canada 4-3.
Zeus scoring GWG. You can't take a team lightly that has 3 Stanley Cup holders and several 2002 World Champions on its roster. Canadians did take them lightly after leading 3-2 in 3rd period, and they paid dearly for it.
Zeus goal (typical deflection from in front of Cam Ward) came 4 seconds into a match penalty for Canada captain Getzlaf after Getzlaf's knee-on-knee hit on ex-Kings tryout Juraj Mikus. I hope Mikus will be able to play in the medal games at the weekend; his play has improved dramatically over the last few seasons, after he spent a couple of them being tutored by Ziggy in Ziggy's hometown club of Skalica.

ZEUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
USA loses to Finland on a late goal with 8.8 seconds to go (didn't see the game but I'm going to bet JMFJ got a -1 on that one). Sweden loses to Czech Republic on a goal with 29 seconds to go. Wow.
I watched the game and I don't think JMFJ was on the ice. I think the main culprit was the defenceman Petry who allowed a Finnish player to pass from behind the US goal, and an unknown Finnish 4th-line player scored with 8.8 seconds left. He scored twice in this game, in fact, after going 0+0 in all previous games of the tournament. Perhaps that's why JMFJ as US captain wasn't on the ice -- the US must have underestimated the Finnish 4th line.
Canada's loss to Slovakia is also largely due to them underestimating the Slovaks. They just sat back with a 3-2 lead, as if Slovaks would fall over by themselves. It was interesting to observe the 2 benches while Canada was still leading 3-2: all Slovak players constantly on their feet, and all Canadians sitting on the bench. It's usually the other way round, with the team in the lead displaying more energy. Well, not this time, and the game was turned upside down in the last 6 minutes.
The late Czech goal was a typical one by Milan Michalek -- he robbed the puck from a Swedish defenceman behind the Swedish goal, slid past 2 other Swedish players and scored with 28 seconds left, ending the Swedes' season on their home ice in the 1st play-off round. (The first time in 11 years that Swedes have failed to make it past the first round of Worlds play-offs -- it's odd for Zetterberg, Franzen et al to experience that feeling twice in one season.)
Wow!
Upsets: the word of the day!
Of course, I'm sure the Finnish would not say that. But, the Americans had a pretty decent shot at scoring a medal this year.
Don't worry, Jack, you'll have a chance to captain the team again, next year. ;)
The best thing about this year's tournament is the Ryan Getzlaf nightclub incident where he waved his fist and said "you do not want this." Then said he was "the captain of the Anaheim Ducks" and then said "3 minutes and all ye are fallen." And he tried to hit on Miss Finland.
