Facepalm all you like but that really is a poor substitue for arguing actual facts. Would you feel differently if it had been another player instead of Torres? Someone with a spotless rep? Try to take that factor out of the equation.
Every player has a chouice whether to stay on their skates or to jump. Is it easier to jump or to stay on the ice? Jumping is the "unnatural" action. There is one and only one reason to jump when delivering a hit. It's to punish the player, usually by hitting him in the head.

Torres is a scumbag and got off easy IMO. I hope Shanny told him that next time it will be a lifetime suspension. Screw him. Let him go work at McDonald's.

If Torres had delivered a clean, hard hit, without leaving his skates, I might agree with you, even if Hossa had been hurt.

    But Torres didn't.

Maybe after a certain number of similar suspensions a player needs to be designated a "habitual offender" and at that point teams are liable for his actions if they sign him.

JD.... don't try and make the particulars of the Coyotes specific situation a part of this.

If ANY team signs a player with a history of suspension and then that player earns ANOTHER suspension I believe that franchise should be penalized as well as the player.

Not only to try and make franchises think twice about encouraging that type of play but also to assist the franchise that now may be missing a player they signed.

Let's say Hossa doesn't play next season. Isn't Chicago owed SOME recompense for the illegal actions of a member of the Coyotes?

    I don't think it's so crazy.

But then I also don't think teams should be allowed to trade draft picks so...

Sadly Doc...the Coyotes situation directly affects this. Operating under the financial restraints they have been toiling under makes them EXACTLY the team forced to maybe look the other way when it comes to character over talent. Its a crucial point here and to dismiss it is unfair to a team that already has been handicapped. And let's say Hossa doesn't play next season...LTIR is your friend, just ask Lou Lamoriello. Injuries, wheher by fair or foul, are a part of the game. Every team has to deal with them. Ok, so this is a fairly straightforward example. No argument about the legality. Suppose it's not so clear? Who is going to determine fault in a less obvious case? You want to allow Bettman to appoint someone to that? I don't? Shanny seems to mean well, but he, at times, seems out of his element. The NHL has a bad history when it comes to assigning power, Colin Campbell being the most recent to come to mind. Like I said, there is some wisdom in your proposal but I simply do not have enough faith in the powers that be to fairly and evenly make decisions that could so greatly affect the balance of power.

Sources say Gary Bettman has reached a decision on Raffi Torres suspension appeal. Expected to reduce suspension by 4 games. 12 down to 8.

What's the over/under on how many games it takes for him to get suspended again?
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

You wonder. Haven't heard a peep out of Matt Cooke for a while have we? Maybe this suspension wakes him up a little too?

Not this one. He acted like he did nothing wrong.

    I give him until Xmas.
