    Default advanced stat question

Does anyone know if there is a stat that can correlate the average time in the offensive zone on each scoring play?

Specifically concerned only about goal scoring plays and how long from entry to the zone. It would be helpful if they could separate out even strength from pk/sh situations. Not sure if anyone collects that data.

Evidently the NHL once collected some of this info, but hasn't done so in the last 10 years.

There is a method using "Player Usage Charts" that indicates starting a play in the defensive or offensive zones, but doesn't get into a lot of detail in that regard. The relative positioning along the horizontal axis (left-to-right) is described as "Which side of the chart each player is on shows which zone his coach used him in – a position further to the left indicates more starts in the defensive zone, a position to the right shows more starts in the opposition zone."

If you would like see charts for all the teams from last year you can check Hockey Analytics.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I assume you are interested on cycle goals vs. rush goals?
I'm fairly sure no one has done that. I'll ask around.
I do know that at the last Sloan conference there was paper on zone entry and scoring. (results: carry the puck in, don't dump and chase. You hear that TMurray? Carry the puck:Good, Dump the puck: Bad)
