i may be wrong, but the timeline as far as i can remember has been...
1. realizing trading for Jeff Carter was yet another in a long line of monumental mistakes, it's made known they are looking to move him.
2. Occupy Nationwide Arena
3. organization comes out in support of Greg Howson, despite reports of conflicting opinions regarding a complete organizational rebuild.
4. indicate a willingness to explore a trade involving Rick Nash, to which he and his agent submit the mythical "list" of teams he would accept a trade to - as per HIS right under the conditions of his contract... given to him by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
5. Jeff Carter is traded.
6. Nash is becoming increasingly dissatisfied as the clock ticks without resolution... does not get traded by 3:00 PM EST.
7. Howson holds a Nash specific press conference, at which time - THE FIRST TIME IT IS MENTIONED, he indicated that it was Nash who originally asked to be traded.
now... this whole idea of a provided list of teams is nothing new. we see it all the time, and i have never seen it unfold like this... with exception to Dany Heatley flat out denying a "completed" trade to Edmonton... which sucked on a different level because the names of the return players got out.
... and with regard to that list, there have been so many conflicting reports as to who was or wasn't on it we can probably only cite the Rangers with any certainty, and then make educated guesses about the rest. even Dean Lombardi said Howson never told him either way about the Kings.
i think it should matter a little that Nash requested to be traded in the first place, considering that it seemingly happened before the idea to move Carter went public, and we heard nary a word about it until AFTER the deadline was over... and in such an unnecessary fashion that loaned itself to the idea that all Howson was doing was sending out a "well f*** you too!" response - in completely poor taste. much like everything else involving Nash and his entire time in Columbus, he has never complained about anything out loud, nor was his trade request made in public.
what Howson did was wrong, and what he's done to the fans of the Columbus Blue Jackets is even worse.
