Balsiille would have better luck trying to move a team to a top media market that's without a team presently (like Houston or Seattle), as opposed to trying to cannibalize the top media market in Canada (Toronto) and pissing off pretty much every NHL owner in the process.

As viable as a 7th team in Canada may be, it also needs to be a media market draw. The NHL's goal of late is to expand visibility - not cannibalize markets that already tune in to NHL games.

Balsillie isnt ****in pro canada by any stretch, he's pro HAMILTON. there are other viable markets in Canda circa 2009 for an NHL club, he is interested in owning a team in HAMILTON. The idea that it's in canada is inconsequential and is strictly a marketing ploy to get people interested. He would have discussed the possibility of Winnipeg or QC if he were serious about "making it seven" instead, he's just interested in "making it hamilton" it's so ****ing transparent, it's pathetic.

and re: buffalo/leafs, it isnt about current fans, they aren't quite as likely to switch loyalties, although Southern Ontario Canadians might be more likely to go for a team in Hamilton just out of convenience, it's about FUTURE fans, of which Buffalo will have a much harder time cultivating.

Only this time, there won't be any strings attached to his bid.

So this decsion could actually work in Balsillie's favor. He will want to pay less for the team as he could be facing $100 million for a relocation fee.

But, yes, the Coyotes will play next season in Phoenix. I expect fan interest to completely drop off.
As do I... Im thrilled to have em here for one more season, but I dont think they'll be here much longer than that. If nothing else, the whole team moving to Canada saga has killed any interest from the fringe fans rather than sparked support for the team.

I guess I dont have to throw away my Doan and Mueller jerseys quite yet.

Not too sure if anyone cares anymore, or if it's just boring, but here's the latest....

TheStar.com | Hockey | Fate of Jim Balsillie's Coyotes bid looms
TheStar.com | Sports | Ruling could be calm before the desert storm

    A quick summary:
Reinsdorf and Glendale were working on a secret deal that would see some sort of tax scheme set up to pay the Coyotes $23 million a year, and if they still lost money (I bet they would) the city of Glendale would pay them an additional $15 million for every year. I thought Arizona was a Republican state?

Moyes (the current owner) doesn't like Reinsdorf's bid, because it doesn't pay off ANY creditors, is now trying to sabotage Glendale's negotiations with Reinsdorf by making these "secret" negotiations public. The Judge is holding Moyes in contempt for disclosing this to the public....btw, Reinsdorf says these negotiations are a deal breaker- he needs this money to make hockey viable in the desert.

Of course, the public has a right to know what the city's plans are with their tax dollars. Unbelievable!!! The city might as well buy all 18,000 season tickets and give them away.

The city built the arena. They're going to be left with a big mess if they don't keep the Coyotes in town. I'm guessing Glendale is hoping that by paying to keep the Coyotes around, the shops and restaurants around the arena will keep afloat. If there's nothing going on at the arena, I don't think that development would do near as well. Plus there's always the hope the Coyotes might eventually be making money.

Looks like the court doesn't give a **** about the NHL BOG:

Judge: Balsillie will be permitted to bid at Coyotes auction
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

The job of the bankruptcy court is to make the creditors as "whole" as possible. Of course it doesn't give a **** about the NHL's Board of Governors.

Phoenix is just like most cities. No wins, no playoffs for years and years equals a decrease in attendance.
