Oh boy, is it ever. The speculation is that the NHLPA is somehow involved. They don't want this team to continue to lose money in Phoenix. Because salaries are tied to revenues, and the players have had 22.5% deducted from each check put into escrow since the All-Star break. The players need teams to make money, so they can make money.
So, that's why Bettman wants to keep the team in Phoenix, the cap (and player's salaries) will stop increasing. THINK: Toronto is the richest team in the NHL, the Coyotes in Southern Ontario will become the next richest. That's going to eventually put the cap up. So now, Bettman will have Florida, Atlanta, Tampa and Nashville (again) all in trouble. IOW, back to square one, year 2004.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

yeah, and for which one? The arena in KC or the one they're building in Vegas or some other arena we don't know of.
Greedy bastards.
The other thing is that it doesn't help the NHL find another tv deal for the US, either.
Oh but wait, Versus is owned by the Comcast Flyers
sucks, my older brother is a coyotes fan (lives in surprise), he went to the last coyotes/kings game and bought a jersey when he really didnt have the money for it... now if the team moves... wasted money all together... thats ok though i'll get him to be a kings fan!
Good Article Here:
Coyotes may be moved to Canada
So of Balisille's bid, $35M to the NHL and $80M to Dell's Financing Corp to start, then the rest of the creditors get to split the remaining $97M, of which Moyes is the largest.
The best part is that the NHL has to tread on thin ice here as the court could bring up the Anti-Trust laws in the maneuver.
What if the NHL goes to Dell and buys up his debt in a deal before Thursday?

The fan's (comments at the bottom) are blaming the team for not icing a better product. It does not sound like a very good sports town.
Back when I was doing my undergrad, I had to take a CA government and politics class. It was right as Staples Center was opening and I was able to write my big paper for the class on the use of public funding to finance sports stadiums so this has always been an interesting topic to me. In some areas it works out great, in others, not so much.
You're right about the people in Arizona. "I need a new stadium!" "Ok, put it on the ballot and we'll pay for it" seems to be the people's response every time.
Glendale getting stuck so soon after paying $180 mil to the brand new arena without any major sports tenants isn't going to look good. I'd say it might be one of those things that helps reverse the trend of public financing of stadiums but with the credit market being what it is, I don't know if a lot of people would be able to privately finance new stadiums.
Interesting article. I figured last night that the bankruptcy laws would trump NHL by-laws but was curious if there was a way the NHL could get around it by doing something like folding the team.
I know the NHL doesn't want Balsillie owning a team and I'm sure there would then be a relocation battle with both the Maple Leafs and the Sabres if they decided to move into Southern Ontario.
Moyes isn't coming out of this situation looking real well either, especially when it sounds like he knew the NHL was trying to put together a sale package for him and he went and filed for bankruptcy anyways. He wants to get as much of his money back as he can and doesn't care about whether or not the team stays in Glendale. Weasel.
Scudder said Bettman and Daly told Moyes on Monday that they would be in the city and wanted to meet. Scudder said the NHL executives were meeting with an undisclosed potential buyer and had planned to present Moyes with a proposal.
Moyes, meanwhile, was aggressively working on the bankruptcy petition. Scudder said he called Bettman and Daly about 3:30 p.m., when the filing occurred, notifying them.
