Say what you will about Brian Burke, I'm always partial to someone who will make a decision even if it's the wrong one as opposed to someone who's afraid to shake things up, or toes the company line. Truth is that Brian Burke as overated as he may be for his situational success in Anaheim, I don't think he was as bad as some say or good enough to fix the train wreck that is the Maple Leafs. I'm glad we have Lombardi.

Brian Burke will land on his feet and keep entertaining us. That's good for the game.

Another thing said today was that Burke was a closer and not a builder. They had an established base of youngsters and goaltending in Anaheim, and Burke went out and tweaked it to bring it home.

His process of building, sans making the deals (and making a splash) at the Draft to get the Sedins was the only thing I can recall him doing in the building category.

He sure liked being pissy at the draft when not getting the player he wanted.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I think the new trend in the NHL is going to be to blow it up, a la the Pens/Hawks/Kings/Oilers, and that way you create a window of opportunity where you can compete.
Not going to be as easy if the lottery now will involve 14 teams rather than 5. IIRC the ****ing Pens had either the 1st or 2nd pick for 5 consecutive years; I don't see that happening if the format is changed.

Pens had two #1 and two #2 which resulted in Fleury, Malkin, Crosby and Staal.

The Edmonton Oilers are in the midst of 3 consecutive #1 picks: 2010 Taylor Hall, 2011 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 2012 Nail Yakupov.

Hawks also got Toews at #1 and Kane at #3.

San Jose looks like a decent fit for Burke.

I don't think they're EVER going to part ways with Wilson.

Actually, I think the best 2 fits for him would be the Jackets or the Oilers.
