It would be an honor to be an invited guest to the White House - no matter who the sitting President is or what your political views are.

Several years ago we visited WDC, and going to the White House was one of the best things of our trip. Of course we didn't see the President or anyone else of political clout, but just seeing the place was quite humbling and awe inspiring - to imagine all the history that has transpired between those walls. Great stuff!

I can understand his position. There is no way in hell I would have gone and shook Bush's hand a few years back (not that I like Obama).

I'd go for the photo op, the White House catering spread and then I would announce "You've been mitchslapped, this country is mine!" and laugh as secret service jumps me, tazes me and forces me to listen to country music behind bars.

    .

Well...it IS his right to decline, of course, just like it's our right to call him out for it if we so choose. You're not being asked to throw on an Obama t-shirt and hat and work for his campaign.

Boo on Tim Thomas. It's within his rights as an Amurrican. I have thought badly of people who did the same thing to President Bush and I hate that guy.

He has the right to decline offer and I think it's great that he stood up for his beliefs.

I would feel the same way if the shoe was on the other foot.

Thomas has issued the following statement

I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers [ sic ] vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

I like Tim Thomas even more now!

I saw this comment somewhere else and loved it: "respect the office, not the man".
Opinion/Question: But when the office is used in a manner that no longer respects the wishes of the people? Does it still garner respect?

To bad he couldn't just go with a "VOTE THIS President OUT!" T-Shirt! That would be awesome!

He has the right, as all Americans do, to chose to be a jackass in the name of his principles.

    God bless 'Merca.
