Everyone agrees he has the right. But he is a jerk for not going. Also if he went, he probably see that going to the White House and meeting the President is pretty cool. He would have heard the nice things that Obama said about him. OHHH the HORROR!

I hope they trade him ASAP. It should be about team not making personal statements. If he doesn't like the state of affairs in the US, take his family to Russia and play in the KHL...

Whether you agree with the president or not, out of respect for the office of the Presidency I believe you should show up to something like this no matter what. He is asked to go shake hands with the President, not become best buddies with him. The 2nd American MVP in playoff history, and he protests by not showing up to the White House with every other teammate.

I'm sure there will be support on both sides, interesting to hear your opinions.

honestly (and i used to be a bullet sponge before changing mos'), i wouldn't take a bullet for anyone other than one of my battles. i think the son in question would feel the same. i sure as heck wouldn't take one for community organizer barack hussein obama

tim thomas has nothing to lose. he's an older guy. he's won his cup. he has nothing to prove. why not?

to all the naysayers who have a problem with this based on a 'not a team player': team player playing WHAT GAME? going to the white house is not a team function. the only team functions other than games and practise, are mandatory team and nhl events. you have to go to the tip a king as a king, and you have to do other functions, but you don't have to go to the white house. he had a choice as to whether or not to attend, and he chose to make a political statement with that choice. 3 cheers for tim for having the balls to say 'f-u' to the system he disagrees with. i would never show up at an event with a political figure in front of me, using me as a prop to advance their political agenda.
