Default Bruins' Tim Thomas skips White House/Obama event honoring the 2011 Stanley Cup Champs

Honestly and unfortunately, I think a little less of Tim Thomas for this. Whether you agree with the president or not, out of respect for the office of the Presidency I believe you should show up to something like this no matter what. It reminded me of a quote I heard from a soldier's mother who died in Afghanistan during the Bush presidency...."My son would not vote for President Bush, but he would take a bullet for him". (I know, that is an extreme example, but still, the principle).

He is asked to go shake hands with the President, not become best buddies with him. The 2nd American MVP in playoff history, and he protests by not showing up to the White House with every other teammate.

I'm sure there will be support on both sides, interesting to hear your opinions.

What a pointless gesture. This is why I never have any interest in meeting or listening to athletes.

As much as I disliked Bush Jr, I would have used an invite to actually TALK to him about my views and his reasons. Tim Thomas is doing what so many people are in politics right now, they are refusing to work with "the other side" and look where its getting us. People with opposite core fundamentals and ideas have been working together in this country for a very long time and suddenly not only is it not happening, if you even dare to try you are voted out of office immediately.

It's kinda shameful and I have lost a great deal of respect for Tim, taking a real opportunity to make a difference by talking to the president and throwing it away. And don't tell me he doesn't have anything to say because he said he will post on Facebook.

I saw this comment somewhere else and loved it: "respect the office, not the man".

I really respect him for sticking by his beliefs, especially since he probably knew he's going to get so much **** for this. It takes a lot of guts to do that. And the wonderful thing is he has the right to do this.

I definitely don't agree with him though. I feel like he should have sucked it up and made the appearance with the rest of the team instead of distracting from what's a very memorable day for his teammates. Instead, he made it about politics when it didn't have to be about politics.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

I imagine Obama will be crushed after someone explains to him who Tim Thomas is. Seems like Timmy is choosing himself over team on this one. Maybe he has a tea party to attend with a Glenn Beck marathon?

At it's core it was simply an invitation and I'm really glad he has the opportunity to decline. In other countries its certainly not open to question.
