It's easy to not backcheck when your'e spending 3/4 the game in your own crease blocking shots.

Problem is Gillis' hands are tied. Van City is 3M over next year's cap*, as of today, and 10 of their players have modified or full NTCs. The bros. are UFA after next season so he has to appease them to get them to re-sign. You cannot let them walk because there's no way to replace 2/3rds of the 1st line.

Kesler is the heart and soul of the team. The guy is always hurt but that's because he busts his ass every shift. He's the one forward you have to hang onto at all cost.

He's got some nice pieces on the blue line but both Bieksa(4.6) and Edler(5) have NTCs.

*Keith Ballard makes 4.2M so he can be bought out, Luongo is set to make 5.3M until Jesus returns and David Booth makes 4.25 but he's the one player in the league hurt more than Kesler.

Gillis made his bed and now he has to lie in it.
Several reasons why I wouldn't discount trading Kesler as well. First, he's always hurt as you mentioned. Then, if you go full rebuild like I would, Kesler would be past his prime by the time the new guys are ready. Finally, you have the issue of building around a second line center which I just wouldn't do. They could get a lot in return for the guy and the return would likely outweigh what he would bring to a bottom dweller for a few years.

This is where the Hodgson deal really gets Gillis in trouble. Hodgson might not ever turn into a #1 Center but he certainly has the talent. Moving him for a guy that maxes out at 20 goals from the wing, maybe, was just idiotic.

honestly, i think it's God's will. Hodgson does not fit the Vancooter character mold, whereas Kassian has a**hole written ALL over him! God even did his best to keep a great guy like Malhotra out of the lineup as much as possible.

    I hate the nickname Torts.

I was looking forward to not hearing it for a year or 2.

Or **** in it. It'll be fun to watch that team implode this coming season. I'll have to start listening to Vancouver sports radio on the 'Net again.

    Scratch Luongo to Toronto.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

And another thing. Remember when the Canucks were considered perennial favorites? They were on the rise and won a couple President's Trophies while almost winning the cup one year. It's interesting when you look back because at the time the Canucks were the heavy favorites to win it all in 2011 and you would think that a team that good would be around for a while. Two years later and it's the Bruins who are still the cup contenders. Perhaps the Canucks weren't as good as many thought. Perhaps the division they played in blinded folks. Perhaps Mike Gillis has gradually gutted the team. Perhaps the Canucks were just lucky to make it as far as they did in 2011. They were one Patrick Sharp shot away from the biggest collapse in history. They were one missed icing call and a bounce off the stantion away from losing Game 5 against the Sharks and going back to the tank for Game 6. And now it's looking like their time is up and it's back to square one. The Kings have their cup and the Canucks don't look like they'll win one for a while. I couldn't be happier. Go Blues, Go Leafs, Go Sabres. May the Canucks continue to celebrate a different franchise's cup in 100 years.
