Thread: Concussions on the rise or just better reported?

We talked about this on the radio show and thought it would make a good question. Are Concussions on the rise or are they just being reported better? On that same note-has the instigator penalty resulted in more liberties being taken with Star players thus increasing the propensity for the possibility of concussions?

Just diagnosed better and examined for more.

There are too many variables to just say "oh well it's the instigator penalty" or "oh well it's just better reported".

There are changes in equipment, salaries, training, rules, number of teams and that's just off the top of my head. Add to that the still uncertain science of concussion diagnosis, treatment and cause....

Anybody who claims to have the right answer is full of it.

Agree with this and so there is no one solution as well. Changing the width of the rink is one suggestion, but if you don't change the hard shoulder pads, you could have collisions at greater speeds which would probably lead to even more concussions.

We have much better diagnosis for concussions so we are probably finding some that would have been overlooked, but it is still not an exact science, so we cou;ld even be calling some concussions when they aren't. Way too much grey area here.

Didn't Buttman say that concussions were DOWN for the year at the GM meetings?

Lets Hypothetically say Gretzky is playing today- do you think he will have a greater chance of getting a concussion then in the 80s? Would more players be taking runs at Gretzky in todays NHL then the 80s NHL?
