Poor choice of word, as I agree with this assessment. Unless the deal is done, and they're working out the details, I just don't see what the NHL thinks this is going to accomplish. Fans aren't going to turn out for a team that is simply grabbing its luggage before it's out the door.
Another poor turn of events that Bettman deserves for all his awesome leadership!
And one day after Glendale approves the 25m to the NHL, rumors are spreading that Hulsizer is backing out of the deal. And now Jerry Reinsdorf's name is popping up again (again, all of this rumor from the local radio and tv hacks). Unf'nbelievable! And as someone mentioned, I do feel like a battered spouse at this point. And Ill keep on coming back for more next season...
My take on this so far...
As far as the money from Glendale goes, they kind of had to make this deal. Glendale stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars per year if the Yotes leave. This money does not come directly from the Yotes, but from the money spent at restaurants, hotels, bars, etc in the Westgate area. If the Yotes leave, Westgate is a ghost town for all but about 10 days per year when the Cardinals have home games. Businesses start closing, and the city losses ALOT more money than just the 25 million they forked out to try and keep the team. Glendale went all in when it decided to build Westgate and become the center for sports in the Phx area. Now that their anchor tenant is about to leave, they are panicking. This deal buys Glendale another year to try and save some face and get the deal done.
Fine, we can swipe Tippet after next season..
I hope the Coyotes stay although it feels not very likely at this point.
It's great for the Kings to have an another opponent within an hours flight and great for the fans as PHX is a 6 or so hour drive away.
Win/Win for PHX and LA fans.
I hope they move FLA or ATL first.
Trying to keep the Yotes in Phoenix is like trying to kill off a buffalo herd with a sling shot.
A pretty accurate editorial in the Phoenix newspaper today on the recent drama with the Coyotes...
