If you want 3 point games then just switch to awarding a point for Period Wins. Which would result in maximum of 3 points for a team or a minimum of 0 points if all three periods are tied after 20 minutes.

This idea would increase the importance of each period played.

But if a team won every period played in a 82 game season they would have 246 points. LOL.

For stat lovers this would be a huge increase in different collected stats. But for everyday fans it be little tedious to follow.

But I like my original idea of 2 points for win, 1 Point for OT win, 0 points for Tie/loss. Best scenario.

But mud... how is this any different than what we do right now? Your proposed system still awards different point totals for games.

I've been under the impression that most fans just want the same total points awarded for each game, no matter in what form the game eventually ends.

First, we are awarding points to the team that loses in OT or shootout. Losing shouldn't be rewarded with points.

For the most part regulation games are 2 point games. Since winning in regulation should be worth more. OT wins should only be worth 1 point. If neither team wins that should mean 0 points.

Ultimately Bettman is to blame for changing the point structure from wins, loses, and ties. That was a good system.

    Fire Bettman.

It's easy to avoid losing an argument when you constantly move the goal posts.

    Pun intended.

You don't think the fact that one is a regular occurrence, and one is a clear outlier makes a difference?

    Oh.

Are we having a serious discussion about ties now?
