    Default Devils sign Damien Brunner

HockeyBuzz.com - Todd Cordell - New Jersey Devils Sign Damien Brunner

The Devils have announced that they've agreed to terms with the 27-year-old winger on a two-year deal worth a total of $5 million (2.5M per season).

I think that's an excellent price for the Devils - especially with the cap going up next summer. $2.5 for a top-6 forward is a steal. Heck, it's a good price for a top-9 forward.

If you've been following my articles or Twitter at all for the last few month's, you'll know that I really like Brunner. He is a guy loaded with skill, creativity in the offensive zone and he brings some much needed speed to the Devils lineup.

He had an impressive camp with the Devils and seemed to gel quite nicely with Patrik Elias, so it wasn't at all surprising to see him signed.

Brunner combined for 17 goals and 35 points in 58 regular season and playoff games last season with Detroit. He instantly adds depth and more talent to a Devils lineup that has added a lot of it this summer.

Brunner may not be an Ilya Kovalchuk, but combined with the efforts of Michael Ryder, Ryane Clowe, Jaromir Jagr and Rusty Olesz, they will easily be able to make up for the offense they lost when he and David Clarkson left.

The Devils now have a huge log jam up front - on top of their plethora of defensemen - so it wouldn't be surprised to see a move or two in the coming days.
Very happy with this. My Devils are everyone's celler dweller pick...as per usual, but I think this team is constructed better than any of the lineups with Kovy. One player does not make a team and with a solid defense, possibly the best goalie battery in the NHL, and some nice puck possession players, I am pretty optimistic that the Devs are gonna surprise some folks. Gonna need Clowe/Jagr to stay healthy, which will take a miracle, but finally Elias has some players that he has some chemistry with.

I don't have a problem with that. Phoenix has NOTHING to be ashamed of. Especially with this years deflated cap it's smart hockey. All things considered I think I would rather have middle tier players spread throughout the line-up than a big star and a bunch of ahl call ups. Look at Pittsburgh. At least 30% of their cap is dedicated to Malkin/Crosby. Ducks have the same issue with Getzlaf and the other jerkoff. It's not smart business anymore. Add in the law of diminshing returns and especially the Ducks are looking at some severe issues a year or 2 down the road.

You all act like Lou's never done this before. ****, he's won 2 cups getting players like this, teaching them to play their defensive system to a T, and then grabbing a playoff performer at the deadline who gets hot and scores a ton of goals.

If anything, Phoenix is following their footprint, except for the revolving door at coach.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Exactly. Calling Lou and the Devils PHX East is a joke. The Coyotes franchise shouldnt be mentioned in the same sentence as the Devils unless it's talking about former broke owners and low attendance.

Lou knows what he is doing. He has proved it many times over.

So where do we draw the line when comparing?
