Devils sale: Philly sports personality tweets Sixers owner Joshua Harris' purchase of Devils is 'done deal' | NJ.com
Unconfirmed so far, but seems to be solid...so how do I feel???
Relieved. Jeff Vanderbeek was a GREAT owner, except on the business side of things. Minority owner that got in WAY over his head...but a great guy who loves the area/team and really wanted to do the right thing. What other owner stands out in the concourse greeting fans at every game? Did a ton at Prudential to make it a virtual High School/College/Minor league museum. Just never was financially supposed to carry the team. He alienated his business partners, the local government and that don't make it easy to do bidness. Hopefully they allow him to retain some minority share because without him I don't think The Rock gets built and the Devils possibly are playing somewhere else by now.
Not sure how I feel about PHILLY folks owning my Devs. Best case scenario they move the 76'rs, who have been hemmoraging money/fanbase into Prudential making it a very viable arena. With the Barclays center there is a LOT of competition for shows and other events. Of course there will be rumors...will both teams be packaged for a move to Seattle f'rinstance...I don't see that happening.
Long story, well shorter than it could have been, I am glad this is over. The bankruptcy tag will probably be as hard to shed as the 'they play in a swamp' crap that I still read/hear...but with Kovy gone at minimal damage(yes...the draft picks rankle...but I never agreed with that punishment in the first place. Kovy staying would have just compounded a bad situation. Never understood making a primetime thouroghbred into a Selke nominee and playing him 40 minutes a night. You got a runner...let him run) I think that things can start turning around from here. Lou has gotta be happy. We shall see what the future holds as far as his relationship with the new owners.
