Trying to compare different eras is going to be very difficult because of the medical side. We truly didn't understand what was happening with concussions throughout history. I remember watching and playing hockey growing up, and how important smelling salts were to the trainers. Feel a little woozy?? This'll bring you back to game form! Who knows what damage was done to so many players because of the lack of understanding to brain injuries.
With that said - the merit behind the increased size and speed of the game cannot be ignored - if you take the players of today and send them back in time to the rules of yesteryear with no helmets, I wouldn't be surprised if we had a death annually in the league.
Don Cherry backlash: Ex-fighters want apology, get with lawyers - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! SportsQuote:
Sources tell The Gazette that the Tennessee law firm Kay, Griffin, Enkema & Colbert will release a statement early Tuesday morning from former NHL players Chris Nilan, Jim Thomson and Stu Grimson indicating the players are not satisfied with Don Cherry's remarks Saturday night and making clear that they expect a full apology from the CBC commentator.
… The sources have not indicated what action the players might take, but it appears clear that they are threatening to sue Cherry and/or the CBC if Cherry does not issue a full apology.
Don Cherry must apologize or could face lawsuit: sources
Interesting note: Law firm of Kay, Griffin, Enkema & Colbert is the law firm Grimson works at. :)
This is a good time to bring up Grimson in action in one of the most insane sequence of events I ever got to watch live on TSN:

"This is a man god MAAAAAD . . . ." Classic.
Another thing that adds more speed to the game is the shorter length of shifts. In the 80's/early 90's, players stayed out there for way longer.
He was called "The Grim Reaper" for a reason.
There's no way of comparing the frequency of concussions post lockout to pre lockout because they didn't really pay as much attention to the issue back then. I don't think there needs to be a study though to understand that the game is faster and the possibility of concussions has increased because of it.
I hate Don Cherry, 90% of the time I don't agree with this rambling old man. I agree with him here though.
