I seem to recall that he was suspended by one of his former teams for instigating fights at practices.

The guy has several screws loose, and I agree with the above sentiments that this case has zero similarity with the videoclips above showing the turtling since those instances are showing retaliation against guys who have brought it on themselves through their actions on the ice. WTF did Holtby do to warrant it? Keep stopping the puck?

He is, at best, a mediocre goaltender and, with his past record of behavior, the GM and coaches have to have realized that he's a potential time bomb every time he plays. And if they directed Emery to do it, they are culpable as well, just like that pisshead Crawford. Doesn't matter if it's a tacit, ambiguous statement or a direct order.

Really, Emery, "I have to do it" to someone totally removed from the incident? Says who. Your twisted psyche or the coaching staff?

    Karma's a bitch, dude.

If Emery was so intent on exacting some revenge, then why not skate down and challenge one of the skaters. It wasn't Holtby that was lighting him up like a runaway pinball machine.

Sure there's a code that says goalie fights goalie, mainly because of the equipment. But there's also a code that says you only throw punches with a willing combatant, something that Holtby was decidedly not.

As ChilledAqua so succinctly put it, "the guy has several screws loose".

Now at the end of it all, and as much as I believe Emery should have seen further discipline, I must say that stuff like this is entertaining.

Emery fighting Holtby is not exactly Scott versus Kessel, yet people are acting as if Emery is some sort of enforcer dressed solely for the purpose of fighting. If Holtby really felt like he was in any danger he could've dropped to his knees and protected his head. We've seen players turtle many, many times before and never has the instigator in those situations been called half the names that Emery is getting called. In fact, Emery warned Holtby to protect himself.

I'll tell you what I'm sick of, is a fight after a huge, clean hit. I.E. Polak going after Pluseau (sp?) after he knocked Polak on his butt.

Zero similarity? Ok. How about when Hextall beat the piss out of Alain Chevrier?

Did anyone call for Hextall to be banned from the league or suspended or was there a call for a rule change to outlaw goalies from fighting? All of this is way overblown. It was a hockey fight, plain and simple. As long as fighting is allowed in hockey, **** like this will continue to happen. And I've got no problem with it.

Fights involving goalies are rare, so right there, you can't call it a plain and simple hockey fight. Most fights involve two guys who want to go, but in this case, one of the combatants was not interested in fighting, but was forced to try and defend himself. He got his ass kicked by a guy who looked like a predator.

Look, I've watched hockey for four decades. I've seen fights and brawls and total mayhem, and quite frankly, enjoyed it and miss it from time to time. But the rough and tumble hockey of yesteryear is gone. In today's environment, I found this particular incident distasteful, mainly because Emery was an experienced pugilist seeking to administer a beating on a likely inferior opponent.
