Tampa fans were heavily booing, mainly due to the Flyers refusing to advance the puck past their own defensive blue line. It may be a "dull tactic", but it's a legal tactic. Not really sure wtf the Flyers were thinking.
flyers didn't want to go into the double trap of the 1-3-1. So the best way to break that is to force the TB to come after them which would make the 1-3-1 fall apart.

Tampa Refused to fore check so why should the flyers be forced to move into the trap.

I have to side with the flyers here. They did what was the correct move.

The 1-3-1 is a legit strategy but it makes a boring strategy when the only option attack it is to wait and force the 1-3-1 to fall apart.

I don't know about you people, but I believe 1-3-1 and 1-4 are ruining the purpose of hockey being a fast, physical game that brings end to end action.

Why should the Flyers put themself into a position where there is impossible to gain the offensive zone with the puck and therefor lose puck possesion via dump or pass interception?. Shouldn't the home team play to entertain the home crowd that bought tickets to watch the game? Standing in a formation is not entertaining.

And yes while it is on the team with puck possesion to continue with the motion of the puck, they (Flyers) never broke the rule.

I believe the ref blew the whistle because the flyers were making no attempt to move the puck up the ice. Later on they just started skating back and forth in the faceoff circles to keep the ref from blowing the whistle.

Why does it not shock me that Philly would resort to such pussy tactics. The trap can be broken, Laviolette is too lazy to figure it out.

So if the league tries to get rid of it what would the penalty be? Delay of Game? Is this going to be like the NBA's rule that you have to get the ball past the half court by 10 seconds?

I agree with the Flyers and their coach. Zone and trap defenses kill the game. Though they may be perfectly legal, they totally kill the game.

edit: Also, there must be a way to setup the first man in the trap to get drilled by some kind of reverse trolley tracks by the team carrying the puck. I imagine that would put an end to zone/trap hockey.

I find it strange that people in this thread say that the trap kills the game, making it boring, but seem to be OK with someone literally standing in their zone doing nothing.

    Seems kinda bassackwards to me.

Then again, I have no sound, so I dunno exactly what's going on. Just seems odd to me.

Buried in every rulebook somewhere it states something like the players have to try and advance the puck in a reasonable amount of time. Back about 15 years ago, roller hockey teams would setup with a guy behind their net who would wait for the opposition to challenge them. The minute they did, the defensemen went the other way with a 2 or 3 stride advantage on the fore checker who made the mistake of going behind the net, and it was 4 on 3 the other way.

The onus in this case resides on the team with the puck to try and advance it.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.
