of course, the accusation doesnt suprise me in the least. however, sean avery doesnt strike me as racist, just a complete ******* when he's playing.

In the original Russian article he does say that Avery used to refer to other players as, literally, "black monkeys." In fact, the Russian article's very title is in reference to that.

It should be noted that Frolov didn't specifically say that Avery called black players that.

And, to gescom's point, the whole "j'accuse" premise of the article is a stretch. It just reads as Frolov sharing some anecdotes about his buddy, although, I gotta say, that it's a bit naive of him to say what he said without realizing that it would get back here, and might cause some problems for said buddy.

The notion of Avery getting into trouble with his mouth was hardly groundbreaking, but the interview with Frolov on sport.ru quoted the former Rangers left wing as saying that Avery “called opponents ‘black monkeys.’” Frolov vehemently denied having said that.

As Spector later found out, Frolov denies ever making the accusation about Avery. But even if he did, the bigger point about Avery was lost in translation.

Frolov, who will play with Omsk in the KHL next season, had a lengthy chat with the Daily News about the quote, denying he ever said anything about "black monkeys" to the reporter.

From Spector:

"I didn't say anything about Aves calling someone bad language — I was saying he's really emotional and that in the past he could say the wrong thing," Frolov told The News. "It wasn't particularly about black people. He doesn't have anything against black people. I mean, he's a nice person, and he wouldn't say something bad about black people or Asian people or any kind of people. It's some kind of misunderstanding."
