I am actually suprised with what the Sharks gave up. I have always liked Cheechoo, and although not a superstar, I thought he was a cornerstone of that franchise. Add another 20 goal scorer and a 2nd round pick to the mix to get a 40 goal scorer who's been nothing but a cancer to his teams and teammates, I think its a bad trade for the Sharks.
Remember all of the cups that were promised when the traded for Thorton. I am pretty dissapointed with the the trade from the Sharks prospective. When Heatley is hurt when the Kings play the Sharks, I'm gonna love the trade.
Value-wise, not that great of a trade for Ottawa, unless Michalek starts living up to his pre-draft projections.
As for San Jose, they still don't have enough players to ice a team, do they?
Hasn't San Jose been shopping Cheechoo for the better part of a year? And Michalek...not much value-for-value unless you are adjusting based on Heatley's obvious issues. What's the over/under for how long till he needs another reset? Hell, as soon as they falter in the playoffs...again, he will be pouting for a change-of-scenery.
This is why the Sharks never get by the second round in the playoffs, when they fail again this year Heater will ask for a trade.
$33M in cap space tied up in 5 players.
Kiss Marleau and Nabakov goodbye next summer.
They only have 15 rostered players, need 7 for a minimum roster, and have $5M or so to do it.
This is going to be a disaster for San Jose, IMO.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

They're sticking to their guns.
They're persistent.
Gotta give 'em that.
