How scary good will Edmonton be in a few years?

So just looking at how bad they have been over the last few years, and their recent draft choices..and the pretty apparent selection of Nugent-Hopkins in this coming draft...it's just nuts how good their offense is going to be.

BUT They badly need some defensive assets and a goaltender worth his salt besides Dubnyk...who many still think is the answer for a while..

So I ask you guys, is Edmonton going to be Pittsburgh or Chicago scary good in a few years because of the likes of Taylor Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, Sam Gagner, Pajaarvi, Cogliano up front?

I am still not convinced. Even with that offensive force they will have...the cupboard is bare on defense, (Peckham, Marincin, Tebuert...Plante? Petry?) to me...they are still a few top 5 picks and big free agent Dmen signings away from being anything close to a competitor. Not to mention the goalie field in Edmonton...Dubnyk....and that's pretty much it.

Anyone else going to be..surprised but not if they take Larsson with the #1?

Kings: Build from the goalie, and out.
Oil: Building from the front, and back to the net.

Wonder which club will be the more dominant one in next few years..

Other than what you pointed out, the thing that would scare me a lot if I was an Oilers fan is that they haven't really had any vets teach these kids a damn thing. They're kinda winging it right now. I feel like they're too young. Remember when DL took over the Kings, his first couple of years he spent signing veterans to teach the upcoming youth. He did the same in San Jose. I feel like Tambellini is going by the motto, "Younger is always better, no matter what." I know its hard to get guys to sign to play in Edmonton, but he really needs to bring in some older guys to show guys like Hall and Eberle how to be a pro.

Which is why I say Smyth back to Edmonton has more validity then anything posted anywhere :)

drafted an Oiler, retires an Oiler, we swap him for a forward prospect or a pick.

But you are totally right, meandering without the guidance of some vets is a scary untravelled road.

I just posted a thread about the same thing and then saw this thread, so I deleted it.

Crazy, but I was thinking the exact same thing.

I don't know about their D, but their O looks great.

If history repeats itself, we'll end up getting most of their current players. Hahahaha!!!!!!

1. don't ever use the term "scary good" again or i'll give you five across the eyes. i hate that term as much as i hate; "needs more seasoning,""off the books,""waiting in the wings.""hometown discount,""shell of his former self,"skillset," and "returns to form."


... and basically any trade proposal where the original poster and any counter offer poster are compelled to post their fantasy line combinations with said favorite team's receiving player(s) and wax about how "scary" that line-up would be.


2. they are going to have a few terrific players up front in Hall, Eberle and Pajamarama, which is a mondo place to start. but, they STILL have the problem of having far too many of the same player. there is no meat and they really have nothing in terms of lunch pailers either up front or, most importantly, on the blueline.... i figure this is where they're really hoping to get Teubert going.

2a. i STILL think they should move both Hemsky and Gagne... the latter primarily because they can't trade Horcoff.

3. no real stable strength between the pipes.

4. their coaching over the last few years has been a real joke.



bottom line is that they could become a dangerous team really quickly... especially when you look at a season on a night to night basis, the skill of that top line and the speed up and down the lineup will be tough to play against. but right now, and we've got a LONG way to go until September, i can' see them doing anything outside of maybe having an overachieving season where they St. Louis Blues it and make the playoffs, giving THAT cocky fanbase mouth fuel, only to let them down the following season and finishing in the bottom 5 again.

if they're smart and truly intend to rebuild the right way, they gotta build it the right way and take their time.

The oilers have alot more talent then the kings if they find a goalie(they have time) I can see them winning the cup in the next 5 seasons.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if they took Larsson at #1, I wouldnt be surprised either if they try to trade up from the pick they got from the penner trade and try to get Murphy.

I gotta piss on this parade a little. Certainly being able to draft offensive talent is great. But the young guns haven't exactly lit up the scoreboard any more than offensively talented players given that much time and no real defensive structure should. In fact they maybe haven't performed well enough to get overly excited (none of the group topped 25 goals). Sure I'll give em a season to blossom a little like Stamkos but really if any of these guys puts up 50 next season I'll be shocked. They're fun to watch at the moment because they're playing run and gun hockey but for doing that they should be scoring more.
