Did you know that the Swastika was used by numerous religions and cultures for thousands of years prior to the Nazis adopting it as their primary symbol? In Buddhism it is the graphical symbol for eternity.

Now tell me with a straight face that when you see a swastika today that the Nazis aren't the first and only thing that come to your mind.

Obviously queer doesn't have quite as powerful a reaction as the swastika but I think you can see my point. Queer, just like the words "gay" and f** is now synonymous with homosexuality. Both of those words, just like queer, had different meanings at some point in history.

The reason why it wasn't a big deal back when you were kids to use the name "smeer the queer" is because gay bashing was consider OK back then. No one blinked an eye if you were to call someone a f*****. You may have not known what it meant but the adults around you certainly did. No one bothered telling you not to use it because very few people felt obligated to stand up for homosexuals back then. This is exactly how bigotry perpetuates itself. You use words like that in your everyday language as if it's "normal", and then when you grow up it's perfectly fine to call someone a queer, just as it was perfectly fine to call someone a n***** 60 years ago.

I'm not calling for Ahlers job and I can probably even believe that he didn't mean any harm by it, but he definitely should have known better. It was plain stupid. I would hope that they at least pointed it out to him and he'll know better next time.

When I see it inside a white circle on a red flag, yes. Don't impose your narrow understanding on me. Today's word of the day is "context" boys and girls.

    Look it up.

Oh right, so a plain swastika spray painted on a wall has no context, so you can't possibly associate it with Nazis. Or if your average joe saw it in a bhuddist religious painting he would never even think about it's permanant relation to genocide and WWII. Nope, never.

Just like how a gang of kids chasing after the "queer" in an attempt to playfully "smear" him has absolutely no relation to homosexuals and how they are generally treated amongst school children and society in general. None at all.

So gay equals lame and ridiculous? So gay people are inherently lame and ridiculous? See the issue there?

Doesn't matter what it meant 400 years ago, it only matters what it means today. Sure, I can be very gay and be happy, and even go outside and smoke a f** if I wish to but there's only one meaning that "gay" and "f**" will mean to the majority. Same with queer.

What should he have said? "Smear the blank?" "Smear the you know what?" "Smear the Homosexual" or "Smear the gay person?"

Frankly there is no politically correct term that could be used to accurately describe the game Ahlers was referring to.

So basically he shouldn't have referred to the game at all because it is inherently biggoted.

I think of Linux, because it is closely related to my work, but it's not the only possible meaning and it's not what I expect you or anyone else to automatically associate it with. Could someone see a swastika spray painted on a wall and think of Nazis? Sure. Is it an automatic just because that's what YOU think? Nopity, nope nope nope.

Like I said, don't impose your narrow understanding on me.

You can call whatever you want. Fortunately you fall into the "anonymous person on the internet who's opinion I don't give a **** about" category.

Exactly. Which is why he never should have said it in the first place.
