i doesn't matter where they play... or where the left shot plays. they NEED a left shot up front.

the Kings are not a team designed to attack off the rush, so handedness doesn't really need to correspond to position.

I feel the same way. And if the shoe were on the other foot, so would all of us. The Leafs gave up nothing of real value, no top 6 players and no critical picks. If we pulled this kind of deal off for a potential franchise goaltender, we'd all be hiding out in case the cops came to arrest us for robbery.

It remains to be seen if JB can carry a team into the playoffs and beyond. No easy feat. He certainly has credentials and is regarded enough to be put into that position.

If he turns into the second coming of JQ, then we got hosed. If the Leafs continue to rotate netminders and don't make the playoffs, then it's a fair return.

We didn't steal anything, we didn't rob anyone, we got a decent return. Much like a decent grade is a C, I am not about to anoint DL as GM of the year for this move, nor is anyone else in the league.

why not, Ray Shero won GM of the year for trading for Iginla, Morrow and Murray.

Am I the only one kind of shocked we got such a great return for an unsigned, "unproven" (as much as we all know how good he is), RFA goalie?

Cheaply replace penner with a solid winger, solve the backup situation with a pretty good goalie, grab a future 2nd round pick.

but most importantly, if that $500K is enough to resign Scuderi and everyone else, what more could Lombardi have accomplished?

More I think about this trade, the less I like it. Frattin's 25 years old, not cost-controlled for all that much longer - how much more is he going to develop, and if he does, he's ready for his UFA contract at that point. And a likely mid-second rounder, at the other team's option as to which year?

Crappy circumstances, just sucks that Bernier was groomed for seven years since the Kings drafted him, and that's what we got? May not have been all that much more on the table, but it's not a great day for the Kings' organization.

I don't think Toronto needed Bernier as badly as Philadelphia or New York.
Name a team where that would have been the case. Philly still says they won't buy out Bryzgalov and NY could very easily just re-sign Nabokov.

and i don't know if it's better than a mid-first. he got a top-9 NHL forward, a quality back up and a 2nd round pick. less upside than a mid-first, but filling two holes in a roster plus a 2nd is a very good return.
With the $500k in cap space it's a little more than I figured because that cap space is SO valuable for the Kings right now. But even with that it's just not mid-1st round value, which was the only point I've been trying to make all along.

The good news is the Kings got good pieces in return, just not "great" pieces. BUT, the Kings have upgraded Penner at a reduced cap hit, replaced Bernier with a lesser player for a reduced cap hit, and acquired a 2nd round pick to keep the prospect cupboard stocked.
I'm not sure Frattin will take Penner's spot...or that if he does it's an upgrade. Size counts and losing Penner's size matters.

No, but that's the reality of the cap this year. Think of it this way: $925k for Frattin and Scrivens for $112.5k...Scrivens at $112.5 saves SOOOO much cap space (compared to signing Theodore or another old UFA) that they might be able to keep Scuderi (assuming he even wants to stay). If DL can manage that then this trade is genius.
