Fratting doesn't make the team out of training camp. “The issue was, in the week that he had with us, he didn’t demonstrate the things we thought were his strengths. If he’s not taking the body and skating, he’s not an effective player," said coach Carlysle.
That doesn't sound like the "compete" player everyone is making him out to be.
You can't find ONE Toronto fan that says "He's 1st line material" while every analyst is saying Bernier could be a "franchise goaltender"
Scrivens is a UFA after next year.
Toronto's 2nd round pick will be in the 55-61 range. Quick, in the last 10 years, of the 65 picks in the 55-61 range, how many have become "impact players" (besides Wayne Simmonds)?
This deal sucks.
Minnesota doesn't have a starting goaltender
Flyers are now stuck with the weirdo whom his teammates hate
Islanders are back to square one.
I trust Lombardi and the Kings have a cup, but this is the same Lombardi that told us a) "Scott Parse is the 3rd best forward on the club" and b)"Thomas Hickey will pay off in the long run."
If Frattin Fails at LW, the Kings are funked
Personally, I just see Scrivens as a "stop-gap" goalie. I don't see him being here after his contract is up next year. I think Berube and/or Jones will prove they can be above average back ups making Scrivens expandable. It wouldn't really surprise me seeing him cut this year either. I would like to think that both Berube and Martin will get their chance during camp.
Scrivens right now has the upper hand just because he has NHL experience, but if Jean-François or Martin light it up during camp, Sutter might pull the plug. He's shown confidence in the young kids (ex. Toffoli, Voynov, Muzzin) so it really wouldn't surprise me if we see Martin Jones in a Kings jersey more often maybe Berube will get a call.
We need someone in the mold of Bernier. Someone that will neither win you nor lose you a game, someone that will give the 5 skaters a chance to win the game, and I'm not 100% sure Scrivens can do that. I don't know if he can pull 15-20 wins in a season.
As for Frattin, I think he will be a solid 3rd liner. Someone that will score goals and take the body. I would expect 15+ goals from him, he has decent skill and speed.
At the very least he's an upgrade over Richardson. I expect him to be way better though.
As for Scrivens, he's a cheap bridge goaltender. He shouldn't be viewed as anything more than that. If he turns out well, then that's great. But you're not paying only 600k for a veteran goaltender to play backup to Quick. Every bit of cap space counts when you're attempting to bring Scuds back or maybe even signing Holloway, as mentioned in DL's conference call.
