Default Jordan Staal to Hurricanes for 1st/Sutter/Dumoulin

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399017

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 1st round pick (8th overall), Brandon Sutter and Ryan Dumoulin.
High price to pay, but I bet re-signing him won't be too tough.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

That's where he wants to be, but since he turned down a 10-year deal at 6 mil per, the price goes even higher unless he gives them a family discount. I'm surprised he got that offer and even more surprised that he turned it down. Big-time brotherly love, for sure.

    1. i'm not so sure it was THAT high of a price to pay

    2. 10-years @ $60MM seems pretty fair for a kid who'll just be turning 24 when next season starts.

i mean both the offer from Pittsburgh and the subsequent return in trade seems just about right on.

Yeah, Columbus should take notes of that deal and readjust their thinking for Nash. Use that as a baseline, and add another pick or a prospect, and move on.

2 Top 6 players, 2 Prospects, and a draft pick ain't gonna get it done to move the Rickster.

$6 million/year is probably still a bit too much IMO. Something closer to $5 million perhaps. Guys like Richards and Kesler make less and have had better seasons.

And I still think that All Rookie Team should have gone to Kopitar.

i'm not so sure... when you lead the league in both shooting percentage AND shorthanded goals, you're almost certainly going to be All Rookie.

i hear ya on the contracts, but in the end - he has a ring whereas Kesler doesn't, and Richards didn't at the time he signed his deal.

$6MM may end up looking like a bit of a bargain... we'll see, now that he'll likely be the number 1 in Carolina.

Jordan Staal is all that and a box of crackers. $6M to $7M per for a decade is the perfect contract.
