He is considered by many hockey pundits to be the best defencemen not currently playing in the NHL. Has great hockey sense and offensive potential. Led all NCAA defensemen in goals (16), points (44) and power-play goals (seven) last year along with being a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award for the second straight season. Other accolades include being a two-time winner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Defensive Player of the Year award, and a two-time member of the WCHA First All-Star Team.

His situation is similar 2 past ones such as Bill Sweatt (Chicago), and Blake Wheeler (Phoenix), if you're familiar with those.
    ...

Oilers called in the big guns using Gretzky and Coffey as pitch men. Still think he signs w/ Van.

I don't like that he bucked the draft system. Wanna make the nhl? it's most people's dream. then sign with the team that drafted you and prove yourself if you're so good. Where does he get his entitlement from? His parents and everyone else have told him how great he is since the age of 14 months. Glad we know that Lombardi is staying clear of a player with this attitude. Instead DL drafts a guy who worked his ass off to finally be drafted and I believe from this alone that Pearson will pan out.

This could cause problems with the draft if more un-proven players try to do this. Hope this is somehow addressed in the next CBA. It's essentially holding out on the spirit of the draft.

I don't care that he left the Ducks (in fact that's pretty funny, among their other problems). But why are teams bowing and falling all over themselves to sign this guy? Of all the guys who were the best-player-not-in-the-NHL-at-this-very-second that were involved in these bidding wars, how many have actually been a success in the league?

I have no problem with a player bucking the draft and junior system. It's draconian and assumes that if you have any other interest in life besides playing hockey in a fashion that the coach you currently have is teaching you are a failure and will never succeed. That being said if this guy didn't get a degree while he was at a 4 year college or pursue any other interest besides a look at me I'm bucking the system agenda....I don't care for him.

I strongly dislike the specialist one way to the NHL thought process that leads many to question the heart of so many Euro's because they come from a different pipeline. There's also significant resistance to the USA development system that has a little bit of an air about it too even though it is more accepted.

Is Anaheim that bad of a destination for a player? Schultz has or had everything going for him in the Ducks, solid team,
youth up coming, sunny, sexy town, and oh yeah, the mentor of defense (Neids). Ducks organization is pretty solid as far
    Hockey goes.

I know who Blake Wheeler is but I didn't know that situation. What I mentioned above was someone else though...earlier in the decade so it's possible that situation was different being it was probably under the previous CBA.

What exactly did Schultz do to get around the draft/Anaheim's rights? I'm curious....what was special about it? Another words why can't other players do the same?

EDIT: The guy I was thinking of was Mike Van Ryn who SIGNED with STL...it was NJD who drafted him. I'm assuming that was different since he was drafted in 1998.

Have heard that Minny is also on his list.

Apparently several other teams have called to inquire. Among the teams that were told "no thanks" were the Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets.
This punk should be sentenced to Calgary or Columbus

And when it becomes clear to his team that he has to be sent to the AHL, is he going to point to a no movement clause as a goddam toddler?

It's getting a lot of press, mainly because he wants to go to a Canadian team and the Canadian media is eating it up. I don't care how good he was in college. I bet he's not nearly as good as he's being touted to be.

He's too young for an official no movement clause but I'm sure his agents will invoke the officially unofficial Jack Johnson no-need-for-AHL clause.

I'm sure this Schultz kid has a ton of talent but let's not forget what became of the last collegiate defenseman UFA to cause a bidding war, Matt Gilroy. And that dud even WON the Hobey Baker!

I was thinking of a good way to discourage this kind of dog and pony show and a simple solution would be to make any previously drafted college age UFA pass through waivers before the season begins. This would give a player like Schultz incentive to either sign with the team that drafted him or get scooped up by the worst team in the league.
