The Devils would have been in a much better position if Kovi had stated his intention prior to the opening of Free Agency. The Devils needed to know they would have the cap space to go after some players, and Idiot Kovul**** deprived them of that chance.

The Devils are going to be horrendous this season. Thank GOD I am not a fan.

Which free agents were they going to go after given cap space? It's not like they've been sitting on their hands this off-season.

Very good, like he's already got the deal lined up for $15M. He played there during the lockout and after he came over, he felt the pull to go back.

From what everyone is saying, that's it. If you really look at the big picture, they Devils got his prime years and now don't get totally screwed on the backend. If he had retired a few years down the road, the cap hit on the backside would have been worse, but because some of the boosted years are there still, its a much lighter hit. I even think that if he decides to come back, the Devils hold his rights.

I wouldn't be shocked if this isn't the last time we see this between a newly signed player and their team.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I think they should blow it up now and start anew. Too bad their 1st was forfeited in the Cap Circumvention declaration by the arbitrator.

...and while I COMPLETELY disagreed with that happening, I will be very upset if the NHL decides to give it back.

Mostly because Lou should have done it at the end of last season when it was going to be 29th overall.

So make up your mind here Kings fans...are you laughing at the Devils/Lou, or are you pissed that they got off so easy. Personally, I am over it already. Like Lou said earlier 'I have been at this too long to be surprised by anything'. According to a TON of pages worth of comments you guys all think we got f'd on the deal originally...so in reality its Teflon Lou all over again. I know that Rangers/Canucks fans are kicking themselves that they didn't overpay homesick Russians.

Not laughing, its a pretty crappy situation to be in. The team makes a deal for a great player, they get penalized for the deal and have to give up money and a first round pick. They also lose Parise because of signing Kovalchuk, who else did they not hold on to because they had all their money wrapped up in him? Then they still have to take a cap hit for the next 11 years. Its just a crappy situation for the team and fans to be a part of. I do guess its better for the team that it happened sooner rather than later and have to deal with a worse cap penalty.

    Wait, ...still laughing.

    Okay, now...no still laughing!!!

Anyway you look at it Lou and the Devils bent over backwards for Kovalchuk. The total cost = the 3 players they gave up in the trade to get him from Atlanta, inadequate cap space to sign other UFAs and maybe the opportunity to retain Parise, the loss of a 1st round pick that will definitely be in the top 10 next summer. I don't know there may be even more for a hockey personnel standpoint, but the credibility the Devils may have lost with their fan base is also something to consider.

I might still have some of those Kovalchuk urinal cards if Devil fans are interested.
