Lets say he signs the retirement paperwork and retires. 2 years from now he decides to come out of retirement...would he still be bound by this contract or would he be a UFA?

League needs to reinstate him, at which point I think they would grant his rights to NJ. Not sure if they completely have a mechanism for that.

Ilya Kovalchuk of New Jersey Devils announces he will retire - ESPN New York

The move is more surprising because Kovalchuk signed a $100 million, 15-year contract in 2010. The Devils can void the remaining $77 million on the contract when Kovalchuk's retirement becomes official.
Ok. So yeah. I am a little heartbroke over this. I thought he was a true devil. Not sure Lou wasn't whispering in his ear...Lou has gotta be happy long term picture. He was able to recapture control of the team from OnHisWayOut Vanderbeek. It's gonna sting, particularly because i thought they did some good things reloading this team, but there are still players out there. We shall see. It's disappointing. At least I wasn't at Comicon, like when Doc announced his retirement

The Devils used Kovy too much(which would have led to injury issues at some point) and made him so responsible defensively that he wasn't able to run like he should have been allowed to do...you don't pay a 40 goal scorer to be a Selke finalist. If this gets us out of a bad contract with the minimum of damage(loss of a first rounder aside) I am not gonna freak out. Hurts in the short term, minute and scoring wise, but his contract was going to hamper the team more and more every year, hell...it still might...who knows. So before i go getting the rope knotted, can someone fill me in on the cap essentials?
I'm pretty sure the $250K is the only cap implication.

I'm not sure how they got off light. They just lost their best player and they have no 1st round draft pick next year.

OK, homeboy has to have plans on playing in the KHL, because there's no way he'd leave with a guaranteed $55 million over the next five years. EACH of the next five years on his contract is over $10m. You don't just walk away from that without a damn good reason.

I assume he's going to play in the KHL for a ****load of money. I mean, he's only 30. What else is he going to do?

Well we'll see if there wasn't any talk about deferred payments later. That's the flip side to the Russia factor.

    Because $77,000,000 x .67 = $51,590,000.
