    If someone retires and has a contract like that, if they come back a year or 2 later, will that contract start where it left off then or is it over and done and can make a new one? Reason I ask is this could also mean he wants to re-do his contract so his cap hit isn't like how it is nor the crazy amount.

    from the sound of it, NJ is going to void the contract. Therefore, should he ever come back he would be free to sign with any team.

    NJ has the option to "toll" the contract, but aren't. It is better for them to take the $250K per year cap penalty for 12 years than have that albatross around their neck.
