I agree as you mentioned that Boston has us beat on quality draft picks and Chicago has us beat on current NHL talent, but I think Chicago has to dump some talent because on next years cap to get either under or just at it for the 2010=2011 Season. So they could be the front runners in the Kovy sweepstakes.

The only way we would get Kovi is this scenario. We'd get him and he'd get hurt and out for the season, and then resign with Atlanta..

Its called history.. look at the great trades we've done and how they worked out..

and re: players getting hurt in the Olympics - see Frolov and Demitra

What if a team trades for him today and then he goes and breaks an ankle in the Olympics? It's one thing for that to happen in a game he plays for YOU, it's entirely different if it happens in the Olympics.

Also, GMs almost always get more by waiting. If you were a GM who wanted him, would you make your best offer today knowing that other GMs aren't? And if you're Waddell, do you take someone's offer today knowing the offers will probably go up in 4 weeks?

Have you read the account of Waddell trading Hossa? Shero wasn't going to include both Armstrong and Christensen and Waddell was about to trade Hossa to Montreal when Shero finally caved and the deal was done. You know when that happened? Less than 3 minutes before the trade deadline: What's it like on trade deadline day? Six GMs share their war stories - ESPN.
Agree 100%, and I echo a lot of similar sentiments others share in this monumentally long thread. It seems we all agree that, Kovy would be a wonderful addition to this team, but it's finally nice to have a team that doesn't necessarily NEED him.

In the past, the general consensus here was: bring in the star power no matter the cost. Now, the talent pool is good enough to sustain the team's upswell in performance and doesn't require the overpay/overtrade to get that much better, especially for a rental.

Default EKLUND: Atlanta May Want Simmonds as Part of Kovalchuk Deal!

    Eklunds Latest Poo,

His name is Wayne Simmonds and he is described as "an enormous talent that Atlanta may not be able to turn down." Many of us in the east aren't too familiar with Wayne, but try to find a scout that doesn't list Simmonds as a top tier prospect..Anyway, a deal may be getting close...

Meanwhile, back in bean town...there are also talks tonight that the Bruins are closing in on a deal with the Oilers that could get them not only some scoring, but another piece for the Thrashers. I am told that if the Bruins make the offer they could make with the Oilers piece, there is little chance the Thrashers would turn it down.

"There is even a chance that Kovalchuk gets done tomorrow if the Bruins can get the one missing piece." a source added.

Shoot up to the Canadian Rockies and the Flames are reportedly considering moving "A Major, All-Star Defenseman" for Kovalchuk. Dion Phaneuf would be the biggest "name" guy the Thrashers could get in a deal...

The Flyers could also do the same were they willing to move Jeff Carter I am told.

First of all, i would say F that.......I don't care how good Kovalchuk is, you can never have enough Simmonds-type players on your team. Now, don't get me wrong, i'm not comparing Simmonds' talent to Kovalchuk, but guys like WS are the ones that get you thru the playoffs. Out of 25 guys in the lineup, who's the guy that shows up night in & night out? You guessed it, Wayne Simmonds! If i'm DL, i'd try to keep Simmonds out of this deal.....

Pierre Maguire on Ottawa radio this morning said he believes, based on some of the people he talked to this weekend that he believes Kovalchuck will be headed to LA, especially with the problems between DL and JJ. Still don't think it's true and think that while Maguire is legitimately hearing this, he's just hearing people speculating

I defer to you. I hadn't even thought about the Olympics and how they come into play in this situation.
