He is going to be a bottom pairing player with good puck skills and a desire to put the oppositions head thru the boards. This, we can wait for...

I like this but...can it happen? ges? and why not resign him?
I haven't been a draft dork this year yet because we won't be in the lottery for what looks like a while, but who in the first roud of the next two drafts do you think will be better than Kovalchuck ever!? not to mention that IF you could name some draft elegible prospect that you think could be better, we won't be picking first overall or in the top10 for that matter.
If ATL takes this(which you gotta admitt is better than the boumeester return) we have to pull the trigger. And I could see it happening for Purcell(former AHL mvp reguardless of his recent play) and 3 mid to late round firsts. There is no better way to start a rebiuld. The 3 firsts from us will be supplemential to the lottery picks ATL will get due to suckage on behalf of there best player playing for us.
You're looking at trading Brown, Williams, and Johnson/Hickey and a 1st rounder for Kovi and a 4th rounder. That's the kind of deal you'd be looking at. And I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted another top prospect. No way!
Maybe right now, but at the trade deadline if ATL is out of the playoffs, has no contract, and you're getting him as a playoff rental? I'd say the terms would be more favorable...
But on the whole, probably still too much, especially with some GMs on the hot seat for their jobs to excel or make it into the playoffs.
Smyth went for Ryan O'Marra, Robert Nilsson, 1st round pick. Not to compare Smyth to Kovi's offensive prowess (though both were/are the "heart and soul" of their teams) but I'd have to assume the deal would be (at least) slightly better than that.
does anyone in this dicussion beleive Atlanta will make the playoffs this year? I don't think so but if they keep winning much longer they are going to have enough points to have to shoot themselves in the foot to not make it.
I only ask because the reduced price for a "rental" argument goes to the wasteside if they make the playoffs just as jaybo did when they almost made it in florida....but they ofcourse they'll draw the rangers and Avery will keep Kovy pointless ...again!
A lot of people are still ignoring the fact that Kovy becomes an UFA after this season. There is NO way we would give up Brown, a #1, Johnson, Hickey, another top prospect or combos like that. That is just insane for someone who may be a loaner.
If Atl knows they can't retain Kovy then trust me, they would be happy with Brown, a #1 and Johnson or Brown a #1 and Frolov. Maybe throw in Moller or Purcell. Either way, Atl would get a top 6er from us and a #1 pick and what did Florida get for Jay?
But the fact of the matter is Pitt never gave up the farm for Hossa. Yes they may have lost a couple good prospects but why did he not cost them Staal and others also? Because it was his last contract year. Same thing could happen to us if we trade for Kovy.
The Bouwmeester situation is irrelevant for comparison at this point. Florida made no real attempt to trade him, tried to make the playoffs with him and just managed to get some scraps for him pre-draft. Waddell is prepared to sign Kovalchuk, but has gone on record several times saying that he is not going to allow a Bouwmeester-like situation to occur. If a deal is not done, and done soon, he will send him off for the best offer out there.
