I think we need to also consider what the UFA market has available this offseason for Lombardi to go after. At the SOF meeting, he talked about not being in cap jail, and maintaining cap flexibility, so that when the time was right for the spendthrift's to have to move talent, or not be able to sign UFA's, we would be in the position to acquire that talent.

That implied the 3 big UFA's this summer (Nash/Kovalchuk/Marleau) and the RFA's of the Hawks (Toews/Kane). Of those, only 2 are unsigned thru next season, and the rumblings from a couple of days ago at TFP are that one of them may want to stay in San Jose:

The Fourth Period :: San Jose Sharks :: Marleau wants to stay with Sharks

So either you go out and get the last one, with a chance to see him and talk to him before the UFA period begins, or you have to make a trade.

We do not have anyone with that talent level ready for the NHL, and this team is showing its time to change gears a bit in the rebuild and start climbing the ladder.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I'll say it again: I would love to see Moller get hot right about now.

One could say the same of the Kings for the prior 6 seasons.

Certainly not enough to off-set the size deficiency, it would seem.

and since he doesn't have that break-neck speed, he's going to hafta develop that Cammalleri-type lower body strength.
