I used to be a believer of rent to own with Kovalchuk. I was for trading a reasonable amount of assets for Kovalchuk with the hopes of re-signing him to an extension. What has changed my mind now is not the cost of assets that it would supposedly take to acquire him, nor the $9M+ per season (although it does have some weight), but what changed my mind was how well the Kings have played.
The Kings need 12 more wins in the next 26 games, a feat well within reason. There is dare I say, even good chance that the Kings will eclipse the 100 point plateau. I personally would not want to mess with that chemistry at this point. 3 weeks ago, I felt differently.
I still want Kovalchuk in a Kings sweater, but I'd rather wait till July 1st now.
For the record, watching Gaborik in last night's game made me wish he was Kopitar's RW! (again)
I think now is the time that everyone who was hoping to get Kovi (including me as I really wish we would have gotten him) can expect that he will NOT be an LA King. I will bet Boston, NYR, or Calagary will land him.
And NO he will not sign here either in the off season. I will put money down that he signs with the team he gets traded too.
Could be that Waddell's phone isn't ringing anymore so he feeds IK and the press this story to get the GM's all jacked up.
Ilya Kovalchuk's days as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers appear to be numbered.
Thrashers general manager Don Waddell met with the star forward on Wednesday and told him to expect a trade to another NHL team over the next few hours or days.
There is no indication that any deal with a specific team is imminent, but the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers are teams who continue to express interest.
Gonna make myself a quick E5 sandwich and say Kovy to our Kings with a 5 year deal signed today at 7.6 million for:
Frolov, Drewiske, Teubert, Martin Jones, and a 1st in 2010
Feels good to dream.
Feels real good.
The Kings aren't as desperate as teams like Boston, Calgary or New York. I'd expect significant offers from those clubs with several NHL players being on the table which should interest Atlanta. The Kings are, according to McKenzie, offering mostly prospects. I don't see it working out but sometimes the best trades are the ones you never make.
# At this point, Thrashers will not let any team talk to Kovalchuk about an extension. To do so would put power in hands of player/agent. less than a minute ago from web

ATL is NOT going to make the playoffs this year, everyone knows that, even their GM....the smartest thing he could do, would be to bring in quite a few prospects and picks to help rebuild a sinking ship...renting a couple guys isn't going to fix their major issues in the ATL
