The other rumblings I've seen have said that IK wants a max deal out of Atlanta for 10 years, or the equivalent of $120M over whatever period.

If you front load a deal for $120M over 15 years, that's a cap hit of only $8M per, and he could pocket $107M over the first 10 years, and retire at 36.

That is a deal that I would consider doing.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

"Kovy affirmed his desire to be a Thrasher for life", but insists on financially crippling his team with a ridiculous contract. Not only is this selfish, but it's pretty stupid because it's going to limit their chances of winning. Just goes to show what type of individual he is.

    Stay away!!!!

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Kovi pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

According to Ek, Kovalchuk has apparently stated that he plans on playing Friday and hopes an extension can still be worked out. Sounds like damage control for the contract leaks. Ek thinks this could drag out til the Olympic Break, which COULD field better offers, but I think Waddell has pulled his move and needs to get things done by the end of the day. Get the best return out there currently and move on...

Unless Ryan, Kadri or Schenn are going to Atlanta, I'm not sure what the hell Waddell would be thinking.

Kovy to Anaheim, one of the Ducks 1sts and a prospect to Toronto and...to Atlanta?

Default Ilya better not expect the same offer in LA

I don't care if even Lombardi was drunk out of his mind and gave up the farm for this guy, there ain't no way that Ilya Kovalchuk deserves to be paid more than Ovechkin, Crosby, or Malkin with a long-term NHL contract. He better not be expecting anything more than a Gaborik or Hossa deal if he wants to play in L.A.

I'd just as soon let him walk to the KHL even if it meant in the unlikeliest of events that we end up with nothing after paying the dear price of Johnson, Simmonds, Schenn, and the 2010 first round selection for the privilege of negotiating. You don't build a competitive hockey club by devoting effectively 20% of your cap space for a fairly one-dimensional winger no matter how good he is at that dimension.

What has the dude done in the playoffs? His struggles to put up points in recent games doesn't help his case nor does the fact that his team has yet to maintain a sustained level of respectability during his tenure there. IK better be pulling a Whitney on Waddell because he's not going to get the same type of deal from DL...at least he better not.

the AJC is reporting essentially the same thing, except that it was Kovy asking Waddell if he was playing and Waddell saying he should plan on it.

I maintain my belief that Waddell wants to move Kovalchuk by the end of the day but if he won't lower his price (cause he is obviously emotional about this and I don't blame him) then its going to go right up to the Olympic Break.

Waddell should, as you say, take the best deal he is offered today and move on because he has a few games to see how the new pieces fit, before having to make a call on Lehtonen, Armstong, Kozlov et al. The Kovy deal should dictate what the other deals look like.

Gotta feel bad for Waddell. He must feel like he was played and lied to. And I still wonder if Kovalchuk was the player dangled to DL that made him go to ownership about the #2 pick in 2008...
