The Ranger's problem isn't Gaborik, it is their Charmin soft defense.
Could there be a worse salary on the books than Wade Redden on defense?
I just don't get the vibe that he will want to shop around when the time comes.
what do I know though...

Marleau gets a team closer to a Cup than Kovalchuk does.
I don't have personal knowledge of Kovalchuk, but my buddy (who I realize you don't know and have no reason to trust his opinion) knows his stuff. I know this sounds goofy, but we've got a fantasy team and Kovalchuk has been on it since he's been a rookie. The reason I say that is that any player on that team is someone we pay ALOT more attention to than other players. Point being that I've followed him pretty closely and he's followed him even closer.Since being given the captaincy Kovalchuk has become a far more mature and responsible player than the guy you are describing. The Kings would be adding one of the most dominant players in the game in the prime of his career and that just can't be bad.
Hmmm...they've scored the 17th most goals and given up the 19th most...is that really much of a difference? The Ranger's problem isn't Gaborik, it is their Charmin soft defense.
Also, shouldn't forwards have some responsibility for defense? I'm sure not gonna say that Del Zotto, Staal, Girardi, Rozsival, Redden, and Gilroy strike fear into anyone, but the one thing Lemaire would actually publicly slam Gaborik for was his poor effort on defense.
