The names Hickey and Teubert will also likely be at least discussed, I'd bet.

Seriously. I'd like to know/see the games he takes off. It would be a good day if Kovalchuk ends up on the KINGS. Brown, Fro, a prospect, and a 2nd or 3rd round pick?... yes please. Either way, I don't see him leaving the Thrashers. He's made it a point to say he likes it there and wants to stay.

    what would Atlanta want?

well first we'd have to look at their depth chart. then you'd have to look at their salary commitments going into next season.

they have something like $4Million in space this season and plenty of money to afford Kovalchuk going forward. any move involving Kovi and you're sure to see the UFAs - Kozlov, Afinogenov, Kubina surely abandon ship as well (though the only player likely to remain anyway should Ilya stay with Atlanta is Afinogenov)

trading Ilya Kovalchuk signals a rebuild around Zach Bogosian, Tobias Enstrom, Evander Kane, Bryan Little and Ondrej Pavelec.

so what are they going to be looking for?

it ain't going to be Frolov. he ain't going to re-sign in Atlanta just because after all is said and done Atlanta will STILL be sandbagged in a rebuild that includes Nik Antropov. as much as you all know that i love the Fro, if i were Waddell, i ain't even asking for him. i'd rather they included someone Purcell as another throw in and roll the dice.

you could dangle a goaltender... but it ain't going to be Bernier, i can almost guarantee that one.

frankly, you're looking at something along the lines of - Brown and a 1st to begin with. the you're looking at someone like Johnson and Purcell or Moller.

you may be able to lump Drewiske in here if they elected to take someone like Zatkoff.

you're looking at a big deal. not a mammoth one, but a real significant one.

then you got to sign him.
I could see the Kings offering Brown, Drewiske or Hickey, Moller, Purcell, and one or 2 of the 2nd & 3rd round picks in this year's draft. Kovalchuk is a generational talent and it is true that the Kings don't have anyone in their system that will develop into that type of player.

Kovalchuk would replace Brown on the wing.

Drewiske or Hickey (one only) are expendable due to Jones and Voynov and others in the system, much as Quincey was an expendable asset.

Moller legitimately probably doesn't have a true place on the Kings. The Kings are trying to get bigger and while I personally think Moller is a hell of a good guy and player and has a lot of character and personality and could be a good leader, I am not sure of his fit within Lombardi's "plan".

If Atlanta thinks anything of Purcell, I am sure he could easily be a throw-in. His value has plumetted.

I think the Kings have 8(?) picks within the first three rounds of this year's draft and can easily package one of those picks.

While the Kings are in 1st place, the Staples Center is still only drawing crowds of 14k-15k. Dallas was a sellout but only the 4th of the year.

As long as a contract extension can be pre-agreed upon, I think this is a move that Lombardi could and would do.

All Kovalchuk has been asking for is for a winning team around him. Well I think the commitment to winning has been demonstrated in the rebuilding process by the Kings. This could be an excellent fit for all parties involved.

You beat me to it SirJW,he said that Waddell would not wait to the last minute like Fla. did with Boumiester last year. And the plot thickens about Kovulchuk signing a long term contract with the Thrashers or being traded by the trade deadline.

I like the way you think. However, why not include Bernier? He is only going to be backing up Quick the next 10 years. Unless there is an injury or something happens where he really outplays him, I just don't see Bernier really getting a shot here where his potential can be used. Even then, I have a feeling we have found our guy already. It's not that I think Bernier sucks or won't be good, it's just I think we have finally got a number one goalie we are happy with and still has a lot of upside.

    and Bernier has more.

they aren't going to breathe on Little Jonnie Jewel just yet... and they shouldn't.

    he's STILL their prize.

I would rather just attempt to rent him for the playoffs and give up our 1st, Purcell, and a goalie prospect. we can then offer them 2 conditional 1st to resign him and simply have no intention of resigning him.
