To get Kovy in a Kings uniform is going to take more than Brown and a bunch of high to low end scrubs like Purcell, Moller and Drewiske. Atlanta to me would want a minimum of:
    -Brown
-Schenn or Bernier(they probably would start off by asking for both)
-at least a 1st round pick, possibly 2 of them
    -Hickey and or Teubert
-and then you can talk about the Moller and or Purcell type guys

You have to give to get and Wadell will want the motherload as outside of Ovechkin, Kovalchuk might be the most exciting player in the league. Playing in Southern Georgia doesn't help his exposure. If Kovy were to come here I wonder if that might mean a Frolov resign and a bolt of energy as if you could somehow keep Schenn I could live with he or Kopitar centering those 2 for the next decade!

I doubt there is anything to this rumor. The thing is, DL has us in a position where we could trade for a player approaching his talent, without tearing apart the current roster.

i don't think they can ask for that much for an impending UFA and expect the return to be close... from any team.

straight away, i'd ask for Brown, Johnson and this summer's first rounder.

    that is a HUGE return.

I don't think either goalie named Jon will get traded, but I am a betting man and I would bet on Quick being traded before Bernier is.

The only way I think DL trades for Kovy is if he gets him to agree to an extension. IF he does get Kovy to do that (which is a long shot), I believe we could get him for Brown, Teubert, and Purcell (or Moller) and maybe a swap of picks or something like that.

Brown has a decent cap #, so that's attractive to a team like ATL. And Teubert and Moller were both 1st round picks. That is more than what they got for Hossa.

But the key is getting Kovy to agree to a deal. Think Roy Halladay and hope Kovy wants to play here.

and by the way, it could also come with us moving frolov to the eastern conference for a player and a pick. maybe pittsburgh for a grinder and a pick.

    what would Atlanta want?

well first we'd have to look at their depth chart. then you'd have to look at their salary commitments going into next season.

they have something like $4Million in space this season and plenty of money to afford Kovalchuk going forward. any move involving Kovi and you're sure to see the UFAs - Kozlov, Afinogenov, Kubina surely abandon ship as well (though the only player likely to remain anyway should Ilya stay with Atlanta is Afinogenov)

trading Ilya Kovalchuk signals a rebuild around Zach Bogosian, Tobias Enstrom, Evander Kane, Bryan Little and Ondrej Pavelec.

so what are they going to be looking for?

it ain't going to be Frolov. he ain't going to re-sign in Atlanta just because after all is said and done Atlanta will STILL be sandbagged in a rebuild that includes Nik Antropov. as much as you all know that i love the Fro, if i were Waddell, i ain't even asking for him. i'd rather they included someone Purcell as another throw in and roll the dice.

you could dangle a goaltender... but it ain't going to be Bernier, i can almost guarantee that one.

frankly, you're looking at something along the lines of - Brown and a 1st to begin with. then you're looking at someone like Johnson and Purcell or Moller.

you may be able to lump Drewiske and Teubert in here over Johnson if they elected to take someone like Zatkoff.

you're looking at a big deal. not a mammoth one, but a real significant one.

then you got to sign him.
If I'm Atlanta I'm demanding Simmonds and one of either(Drewiske/Hickey) or (Teubert/Voynov)

Adding Simmonds, Drewiske and Teubert to the core that's already in place in Atlanta would be ideal.

i didn't even consider Simmonds from Atlanta's perspective, but good call.

my counter would be that i'd trade Brown and Moller before parting with Simmonds.

2/26/2008 Atlanta Thrashers traded Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a 1st-round selection in 2008.

you don't deal Frolov at that point... you low ball him and give him the option to walk.

the and Pascal Dupuis part is the REAL kicker there, huh?

that there folks is a deadline deal for a UFA, and close to the best they're going to get if they wait until then.
