i want to win a Stanley Cup too.

and i honestly believe that no matter who Atlanta gets in return from the Kovalchuk deal, that team on it's current trajectory will be in contention for Taylor Hall as well... hell, they may even up a lottery team even if they don't trade him.

ges is your penchant for a contract not being chalk full of pseudo years coming from the stance strictly of the Russian wonder? if I'm DL and have decided the wonder is "the dude", the only way to have him on a winning team would be for a contract of said persuasion...

I still think that Hamill, Colborne, Rask, 2 1st's this year (One a potential lottery pick), and 2 conditional 1st's next year (If Kovalchuk is resigned) is far greater than anyone else could seriously offer.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

boston can offer up their whole prospect pool if they want. they'll be hard pressed to clear cap space for kovy though.

It sounds like you're talkking off the cuff. I've done the research in the past (nhlnumbers.com Home) and I'd suggest you do it too so rather than guessing you know for sure.

There are repercussions in signing a guy as expensive as Kovalchuk and I don't know how that could get done, given DL's penchant for good cap management.

i trust DL can manage the cap. i think there is room for one more front line player even after re-signing doughty.
Don't forget that when Schenn makes the team, his cap hit will likely be around $3M, Hickey too.

i think we're in the same boat when it comes to kovy. IF DL thinks he's the right guy, then try and make a move. we have assets and we might as well use them. we're coming into the window of where we need to make the playoffs consistently and make some noise when we get there.
Lecavalier could also be described the way you're describing Kovalchuk and the Lightning seriously regret that deal. They really don't want him at that salary but they can't trade him...and they've got about 10 more yrs of this.

Of course it is. It is one of those common situations where the fans whine that a team doesn't keep a player. Then after they do get all enthusiastic about signing the guy. Then after the dust settles and the player isn't what they expect (meaning: don't immediate win Cup) they whine management are idiots for signing a guy and create a Cap problem. As a team GM you just can't satisfy everyone...in fact you can't satisfy ANYONE.

As to this situation, if I'm the Kings I stay away from these kinds of "deals".

Would Atlanta trade Kovy to an Eastern Conference Team? I would rather trade him to the West just like Ottawa traded Heatley to the Western Conference

That is correct. Just wishfull thinking on my part that the Kings have a good chance at getting him without another team outbidding them.
