All I have to say is thank God Bettman finally grew a pair and stood up to Uncle Lou. Who knows, depending on how this turns out, he may actually get cheered in 29 buildings in the NHL for once. F the Devils and Divachuck!

There's no way DL should bring Kovy in if the deal presents itself. Not after what he said.
Hossa's brushed into a grey area, sure. But his contract only goes until he's 42 and the last 4 seasons of his contract are at 1 million apiece.
Kovalchuk's goes til he's 44, has 5 years at 550k and a year before all those at 750k.
Meanwhile, guys like Recchi, Modano and Selanne are all playing at 40 for about what Hossa's scheduled to make at the same point in his career. Kovalchuk's scheduled to make just over half that.
There's a bit of a difference.
I think you missed my point. Even if previous contracts should not have been put through (wrong place for that discussion), that's no reason to allow one so blatantly crooked to get by.
If you did, you'd have horses running around and constantly pooing on your porch and tractor. Is that what you want?
DiPeietros contract was long but he was signed at an earlier age & the payment structure didn't balloon through out the years the way Kovy's does. If you listen Deans inter view on Fan 590 the Kings structure their offer on an arc to do with the payout to players in their later year like what Selanne or Luc were getting paid at 38 years old. What the Devils did with paying him $6m for 2 years then $11.5 for years, & the league minimum a=in the "retirement years'; it's a clear violation of the CBA in circumventing the CBA. Even better his agent can lose his certifaction with the NHL for doing this contract bcause if violates CBA 26.
He's Deans interview on Fan590.

Didn't the league take a serious look at Hossa's deal in regards to circumvention last year? I seem to remember hearing about that a few days after he signed. That would seem to me to be the warning shot of 'we'll let this slide, but don't push it any more.'
That's funny, I read the entire quote (and not just what the other poster high lighted) and I got the impression that he and his wife were not impressed with the area. Everyone keeps saying it's a choice between New Jersey or LA, but in reality it's Manhattan vs Los Angeles. The Big Apple won this time. To each his own.
I get it I do...and I agree that this contract basically stretches the loopholes like taffy...but the simple fact is other similar phoney contracts have been approved. The NHL has a habit of reacting too late. This contract is a direct result of the other deals being allowed to pass. 'Give a man a rope he want's to be a cowboy' and all that. The way to stop this from happening is to stop it at the outset. Just because this contract is ridiculous, and I agree...it is...it is a crafty attempt to bend the rules that have already been bent...to the maximum degree. What is Hossa's contract for? 15 years??? He's in his 30's...no way he plays 2/3rd's of that deal. That's when the brakes should have been applied. Not only because it circumvents the cap, but also because it circumvents the 35+ year old rule. Now if the NHL wants to say that a player that signs one of these deals is GUARANTEED, after the age of 35, the full terms of the contract, I have no problem with that. But anything else has to be settled in the next cba. Everyone is so quick to defend the owners/NHL...but this is the system they wanted. It cost us all a year of hockey. Remember that. This all falls on Bettman's watch. The man should have done the right thing and stepped down when the last contract was signed. Now all of a sudden he's gonna enforce rules that he should have been vigilant about from the beginning. Piffle I say! This deal and many others like it should have to go thru so that the NHL might finally be led by someone else. It's really just Gary B. trying to retrofit a problem he helped create.
