I know...but you have to take a lot of other things into account. Vanderbeek took over from the Yankees group ownership...he is the rare owner who is not part of a conglomerate. The guy goes to every home game and personally greets the fans. He wants a winner. Marty is gone soon, Kovy represents an equal to Ovechkin/Crosby, and with that newish house in Newark...he needs to fill some seats. Lou's ways worked when we did the victory parade in the parking lot...but like a ton of people have been saying since the lockout...it's a new NHL. The Devils have had a winning record(despite the playoffs) for years, yet their attendance is low. You have to put asses in the seats. Kovalchuk does that. He automatically makes us relevant and a contender for Winter Classics. So the Boss covets him. Lou was sent out to make it happen. And lou don't screw around. He is going to swallow a bitter pill but make it work for the TEAM. And that's what he tried to do. Personally I love the change, because it will force my team to stop trying to win 1 goal games. It's the new NHL...defense is a bad word.

The silver lining is that perhaps the end result of this kind of alleged interference from upstairs will help keep Tim Leiweke out of Dean Lombardi's dealings.

But I was simply quoting someone else. Like I said, playing NJ Devil's advocate.

No, I think the awareness issue is still in question!

I understand the emotional reactions, but age and experience do matter when you are discussing longterm reasons for avoiding that Kovalchuk contract.

I do have to ask you then, my god, what defenseman on that roster can complete a 25 foot pass, 'cept for Andy Greene?

If anything, it seems like the Devils increased their d-first approach with the Volchenkov and Tallinder signings. I don't follow them that closely of course, so that is just an out of towner's opinion.

Well Volchenkov is a monster...pure defensive defenseman, so no argument. Tallinder is a bit more of a puck mover...but his biggest contribution will be mentoring our sw(iss or edish...I forget) defensive prospects who have tore it up for Johnny Mac in the minors. The only thing I have more faith in than Lou is our scouting staff. Yeah we have had low picks every year, but our staff has made lemonade outta lemons.

BTW both of them are hard on the physical side...so we will have some crease clearers at the very least. I love Colin White/Salvador, etc...but you have to play hard in your own zone.

My mistake. I thought post reflected your thinking.

I wish I could claim that with age came wisdom. Somehow for me, age showed up alone.
